Fasting test

Hey!

I've just tested my fasting blood glucose and got these numbers:

10hrs - 5.3
11hrs - 5.7 and 6.4

Any reason why the 3rd is so much higher?

I've not eaten and new to this

sorry i,ve no idea, i,m still learning about my readings
 
So it I'd likely to be above 5.3 and below 7?

What else did you do between the two tests? Ideally a fasting test should be done immediately you get out of bed after washing your hands. If you then start pottering about, having a shower, doing odd jobs, this will more than likely raise your levels as your liver will be dumping glucose to keep you going until you eat. There isn't much difference between your 5.3 and 5.7, and that could just be down to meter idiosyncrasies as Douglas suggests.
 
Hey! Between them, I was walking around the house and watching tv etc... I guess if I'm up and about I would need to be using energy?

Yes, as soon as you wake up you need more energy, even to get out of bed. If there is no food in your system your liver makes the decision to give you an energy boost.
 
I'm sure mine does it simply to wake me up.
I usually get the highest reading in bed, then it falls after I get up.
 
Mine does that. One reading straight after waking up and one a lot higher after shower and stuff. Annoying! Should we have something on hand to eat straight away?? - surely it would take a while to get into the system by which time the liver would have already done it's thing? Can't really eat before waking up!

Mine goes up after my skin temperature goes up. Then again, it can also go down after a hot bath, and my muscles relax. And again, it can go down during exercise, as my muscles use the glucose, or it could go up, as my body releases glucose,
And it can change as the blood in my capillaries changes as my body flushes blood from my core to the surface, so I have to say, I can probably test until I get an answer I like.

So, generally, if the numbers in the region it should be, that's normally good enough for me. If it's a very odd reading, wash and re-test.
But I generally just use my meter to identify foods that spike me, then I can avoid them in future.
 
My fasting BG does this.

I wake up at say, 6.1 trundle around showering, dressing, wallpapering the facial cracks, and by the time I sit down to brekkie, I can be anywhere from 6.8 to 8.5

It kind of makes a mockery of the doctor using my fasting BG as a diagnostic tool.

Over the last year I have been trying to work out why, and I've discovered that in my case, the following have a big impact:
Amount of sleep (sleep deprivation drives it up)
Level of background stress (the more stress, the higher it goes)
Level of stress that morning (a job interview would send it sky high!)
Food the night before (carbs drive it down in the morning, but increases my max BG levels for a day or two)
Exercise levels, both short and longterm (regular exercise reduces my BG levels overall)
Exercise that morning (extra trips up and down stairs before breakfast cause it to rise a lot)
Extent of low carbing (reduces my overall BG levels delightfully)
What time I eat breakfast (the later I eat, the higher it goes)

So now, I have a low carb snack before bed.
Then a Brazil nut before I get out of bed (usually stops the rise)
I try not to do anything physically demanding before breakfast
And I eat breakfast as early as possible.

Your mileage will of course vary

I'm so confused with all of this :/ I have been told I'm pre diabetes but for the past few days my bs levels have been in the "normal" range with the exception of this 6.7 fasting one this morning :/

What was your HbA1c and how long ago?

They haven't done them... Just the fasting blood sugar and asked me to monitor pre and post meals... The last 3 days my levels have been:


Wednesday 10pm - 7.7

Thursday

fasting 5.3 then 5.2
1hr post lunch 7.2
1.5hr post lunch 6.8
2hr post lunch 6
Random late afternoon 4.8
2hr after supper (chicken and veg) 5.4


Friday

Fasting 4.9 5.4 5.5

2hr post breakfast 6.2
2hr post lunch 6.6

Pre meal 4.9
2hr after meal 6.7 and 6.4

Saturday

Fasting
10hrs no food - 5.3
11hrs no food 5.7 and 6.4


I'll be having to give these results to doctors when I see them - all taken using the Aviva Acuchek home test moniter but the first day fasting I hadn't washed my hands as I didn't realise I should!
 
Those numbers look perfectly normal to me.
What was the fasting test that was done when you were told you had pre-diabetes?

These numbers are all within +/- 10% of their average (5.8 +/- 0.6), so they are within the expected uncertainty of the meter. In effect, none of these readings are different. In effect, all 3 readings are "the same reading".

What did they tell you was the normal range vs pre-diabetic range for fasting values and post-meal values?

The fasting one was 5.5 and that was when they told me about pre diabetes.

And with regards to fasting and post meal they said:

Fasting 5.5 upwards pre diabetes
Post meal 7.5 upwards pre diabetes
