Hi,

I'm new to the forum and i guess quite new to diabetes (under 12 months). When i was diagnosed the doctors, nurses, specialists couldn't decide if i was typeI or typeII and they don't seem too concerned in labelling it - they say i'm in an under-researched grey area (early 30s, maybe about 1stone overweight but nothing too much). The initial advice was diet and exercise. I was put on the sick for a month so I was able to go the gym a lot and i panicked a bit and went excessive with the strict diet. Things didn't really improve so much, blood was still averaging about 12-13.

So to cut a long story short i've ended up on 6 starlix a day and 2 (850mg) metformin, but the exercise has all but gone as work & kids take up all my time. I'm fed up today as all i have eaten for dinner is a fresh meat sandwich on 2 pieces of wholemeal bread and my blood is now 16.8 (after my tablets and 2hrs since dinner).

I suspect I may be put on insulin but this is my worst nightmare as im very needle phobic and also scared of the hypos .

Any advice?
 
i can understand.... dont seem fair does it.. i am also new.... diagnosed type 1 in may this year... i cant really comment on your case and you being type 1 or type 2 but ...
1. hypos dont be scared.. yes at the begining they can be very weird i used to start felling bad if it went below 5 now it can be about 3 and the feeling is no as bad
2. needles.. again i aint got a phobia but i say that pricking your finger is more painful than injecting and i am the worlds biggest wimp..
i know it aint much but you will be able to deal with it as time goes on.. and i can remember when someone told me that for the 1st time my intial thought was b@ll@cks but you will get some good advice from the folks on here i check it everday and there is usually something of interest...

so i hope you get the advice that is helpful take care..

I am 18 now and I became diabetic at the age of 5. I think it's alot easy to be diagnosed earlier as I cant remember having any needles when I was young. So I have basicly grew up with it and am use to it. You will find when you start taking them you can get needles that are very tiny and it wont be in you for that long just a few seconds and it doesn't hurt at all so nothing to be scared of A hypo can be scary at first you will feel weak your hands may shake but its nothing to worry about just eat something thats high in energy and it will go but this is very rare if you learn to count carbs and match insulin to the food then this is very likely to happen
 
have been type one since 2000 honestly you do get use to needles and injections ,the needles are very fine .I had a great diabetic nurse who helped me .hope things get better for you. and welcome to the forum !
 
Hi Aquatica and welcome to the forum. You don't say what strength your 6 Starlix tablets are - they come in 60, 120 and 180mg strength. As their purpose is to reduce the spike you would get immediately after eating, and your post-prandial test shows quite a high level, you might be switched to a higher dose if you are not already on the highest.

Also doctors tend to juggle with the metformin dosage before considering insulin. Your current 850mg is less than half the maximum 2000mg per day dose. If all else fails then you could be switched to insulin, but if that happens, as several people have said, injecting is not that difficult. For years I had a phobia about needles but I am now on Byetta, which has to be injected, and it doesn't bother me at all. As Lee said, the finger prick hurts more!

new to this alo,I have just found this part of this site..i have been chating on another area.
Im due after one more test to be put on medds ofr d/b..the hypo you talk about are not nice..being new to them (if that waht i get)I tend to get sortof hunger pangs strongley and feel light headed..then shakey and week legs..had one tonight usualy i wait tul it goes as my blood is not that low at times..but i still get some sort of feelings hypo im thinking..is every one diferent then? i did eat a digestive biscuit when having that feeling come on tonight..and i did feel better very soon after. Im trying to take things slower now as i do tend to get anxeouse with things that i dont understand..next will be this test..starve then nhospital then blood test..then given shuger and wait for two hours and have another b/test to see how the blood is after suger..anyone else had simuler?

Yes ,Maria,this is called a Glucose Tolerance test.They take blood first thing after you have fasted overnight,that is the first test.You then have to drink about a glass and a half of glucose mixture(Which is absolutely disgusting!!)you then wait for two hours and they take another blood test.If this number is over 7.8mmol/L then they say you have impaired glucose tolerance which is just another way of saying you have or are on your way to diabetes.If the number is over 11.1mmol/L then you have diabetes.

My bigest phobia is dizzy and low blood suger through not eating..always had that its in the family..we all go shakey and white if we miss meals..extra..im guesing here..is it mainly caused by over weight? wen fist diagnosed i was only 8 half stone to 9.
but no shock its hit me now worse..i have put on weight..not swmoking and an illness..any way..I will be glad to drink any drink as long as it makes me feel full!! and gladley wait another two hours lol..if nothing in tummy..im no good to anyone!!as soon as i eat im fine then...did that at the hossy when once going for bareum meal xray(drink thick white stuff)..they had to take it off me...giggling when i think of it now,..it filled me i wanted to drink all!! but wasnt allowed.
also if i want to excersize..do i need to eat first i would imagine as b\s would drop fast on me.
