Feeling fed up and at end of Tether ...

After many months I have some positive news and I wanted to share this with you.
When I riginally wrote my post I was unhappy with my life with Diabetes and was under investigation for Crohns disease on top of having Diabetic Retinopathy and necrobiosis lipoidica, my levels were running high and my hbA1c were 12.0.
I went on an Insulin adjustment course in July and through regularly checking my blood sugar levels and counting my carbs, by the september, it had come down to hbA1c 8. That is fantastic for me and my aim is to get down to 6-7 by the next time I go for my Diabetic check up.
It hasnt been easy as I have been ill with teh dreaded flu but I am positive that I can get back on track and get to my goal.
Anyone who was like me and got fed up with their diabetes, there is light at the end of the tunnel, you just have to ask for help and I want to thank everyone for their advice and comments, it kept me positive and it was great to know that there is plenty of support out there.

Hi all

Further to my original email, just wanted to let you know things are more positive. The Dafne course went well for me and I am still counting carbs and recently I have been diagnosed with Gastroperisis so no wonder my levels have been all over the place!
I do regular tests now and at the end of this month, I am going on the insulin pump which I am alittle nervous about but I am looking at it in a positive way.
If any of you guys and girls have recently gone on the pump, it would be great to speak to you.
Thank you all for your helpful advice and letting me into your situations, this is one of the reasons why I love this site and hope that my replies and concerns have helped others to make changes and share their experiences.

Thought as I started off with alittle negativity and feeling very low with my diabetes I would give an update on how I am doing now. I went on the DAFNE course which reminded me of the old way of counting carbs and helped me understand what I was eating and how to calculate my food correctly. I also got in touch with one of the hospitals that have completed some of the Islet transplantations and Kidney transplants to understand the risks and the pros and cons of such an operation and the consultant agreed to see me and discuss my options. I took in all the information and the hospital were extremely helpful in advising me on my options and the statistics of these operations, something that is not to be taken lightly and some of the side effects can be life threatening. I discussed all my concerns and overall what I wanted to get out of my Diabetes (Less life threatening hypo's, better control, lack of injections, no more ocmplications, all the normal worries us Diabetics have). I found out I was suitable for the transplant if that was the road I was wanting to take but after discussing my options I then decided before such drastic action, I should try the insulin pump. The insulin pump would be less intrusive and I didnt want to wonder if the transplants went wrong 'What if' so here is what happened.
I have been on the insulin pump for just over 2 weeks and I am already seeing progress, I am not getting as many hypos and my levels are slowly getting to my target (which has been set at 8mmol), Ihave never had it controlled so much and I have surprised myself on how well I am coping with it.
For anyone out there who is feeling how I felt about their Diabetes and feels at the end of their tether, speal to your Diabetes consultant and see if you can try the pump. I change the pump every 3 days but that has saved me 12 injections .. I dont think I will ever go back to manual injections.
The downside, the pump is bulky and I have problems choosing clothes to wear at times but would I swop it .. NO.
There is light at the end of the tunnel, keep positive and you will get there. DOnt be afraid to ask for help and reading various posts on this site helped me realise that I am not the only one that suffered with my Diabetes. I was the worst person to look after myself and never very good at blood tests .. I am doing 6-12 blood tests a day and I have never felt better.
