Foods to take camping...

Last Bank Holiday weekend we went camping to Beddegelert in North Wales. Had a great time, BUT, it was a disaster in terms of low carbing! Eating carbs was just 'easier'. So after 3 days of eating tonnes of carbs I came home and continued the carb frenzy until Friday.

It's been a wake up call, I'd forgotten the sort of person I was when eating carbs. I am a completely different person now, it's unbelievable really. This week I have felt , sick, lethargic, depressed, foul tempered, totally lacking in motivationI even fell asleep in front of the telly on Thursday, something I haven't done since low carbing. Just to think I used to be like that ALL the time, God knows how my wife put up with me!

Anyway to cut a long story short, I'm looking for ideas of foodstuffs I could take camping with me. In the summer we're hoping to camp for 2-3 weeks at a time and I can't live on sausages and eggs the whole time! So come on lets have some ideas, we won't have any refrigeration either in most places either. I can think of the most obvious things, BBQ, tinned meats, tuna eggs, etc just thought I'd see what other people take.

You may need a cool box but mozzarella balls should last in there for a day or two (and other cheeses but I find mozzarella balls particularly easy to eat all in one go and not too expensive)

There is a company called go lower which do nut bars at around 4g cho per bar

They also do ready meals which are carb controlled at around 10g per mealand can be stored without refridgeration then heated up on camping stove but you may need to sign up to their programme to get them. However I bought a box on ebay recently for 35 pounds for fourteen - put 'go lower' into ebay and see what comes up!

Hard boiled eggs also an option for camping!

I like tinned ham and bottled frankfurters. salads of course. Cheeses, Fergul loaf
You can make your own cooler by using basic physics. Put your food into a closed box and the box into a washing up bowl of water. Wring a towel in the water and put it over the box with ends dipping into the water to act as a wick. As long as you make sure there's enough water and the towel is damp, you'll get cooling.
 
Before the days of fridges we had a milk bottle cooler, a porous earthenware pot which you upended over the milk bottle placed ina saucer of water. You can get coolboxes and large mouthed vacuum flasks too.

Tinned fish? Smoked salmon? Fishing rod? Bow and arrow? Rabbits are low carb and squirrels are reputed to be tasty.

Also for salad you could read Richard Mabey's Food For Free or a similar book. Beware of mushrooms though, only a few are toxic but many taste like ****.

Thanks for the replies guys, to be honest though I'd already considered most of these. I think I just have to change approach, I was hoping to take a load of stuff with me, but realistically it'll be easier to shop whilst there I guess. Thanks anyway! Great tip about the DIY cooler, I didn't think about that. Any terracotta pot could be used to achieve a similar result. Thanks again
 
I am away camping next weekend so thanks too for the ideas. It's my first camping trip away since I was diagnosed so I can't just live off chips from the burger van this year

LOL, it would be nice though wouldn't it...lot's of cold beer too of course! Where are you going Sam?
 
I am a saddo that is into old VW beetles and campers and I go to the organised VW shows that are on during the summer. I am off to Biggar in Scotland next weekend. I have bought a cool box and stuff but know from experience that stuff like salad looks pathetic as soon as I get there never mind the next day so it is going to be the veg I have trouble with. I have my red wine though I don't really have any cooking stuff either as like I say there are lots of choices of food vans there but they are a ridiculous price and it's either baked potatoes or chips!!
 
Dutch ovens are the latest trend in the world of camping Sam. Get you stew in a cast iron pot, leave it on a very low heat, ****** off for a few hours then come back to a hearty meal, lovely! But probably not a solution if you are travelling light!
 
One of my mates has a dutch oven and paid a fortune for it but one day when I have money that is the first thing I will be buying. The smell that comes from them when they are cooking is divine

I have to admit, the very thought of camping would do that to me. :lol: Forget any effect of carb. intake.Just the idea of going anywhere near a tent, being cold, sharing living quarters with insects and walking through mud to spend a penny,brings me out in a cold sweat.
I used to be a comfort eater and a week camping would have me stuffing my face with ALL the wrong things..........within no time I'd be singing 'Doughnuts are a Girl's Best Friend'!
 
Have to agree Choc...it was freezing and was up 3 times to go to the loo during the night. I had 3 t-shirts, a hoody, a parker and a poncho on and I was still shivering :lol:
On the plus side, Fergus bread and eggs kept me going for breakfast and took olives, cheese and hummus to snack on. did stray to the van for chips on the Saturday night as I was rather drunk on sloe gin, but my BS remained in the 5's and low 6's. Just hope it is warmer in July when I venture out in my tent again
