Foot massage and exercise

Does anyone know if regularly having your feet massaged, and walking every day, helps avoid any diabetic-related problems with your feet long-term?

I regularly go for reflexology, thai and swedish massage, as well as walking to and from work some days.
It certainly doesn't do me any harm and is very relaxing.

Unless you hear otherwise - go for it

I do - I get my husband to massage my feet a lot!! But my question was, does anyone know if this prevents diabetic-related problems with your feet.

Hi nannoo,
I am qualified as a therapist in anatomy, physiology and massage and would say that the benefits are a feeling of well being and relaxation. That in itself works wonders for people but anyone who practises this form of therapy and suggests it can cure anything is deluded. The aim is to make clients feel better.
Hope this helps,
Catherine.

Thank you, but I just wondered if stimulating the circulation regularly in the feet (feet that are currently fine and seemingly healthy) can prevent necrosis in the long term.

Hi nannoo,
The best thing is to keep control of blood sugars and exercise including walking. No one knows what the future holds for us diabetics as most medics call it a progressive disease. Looking after ourselves is the best we can do and that includes relaxation techniques like massage. Hope you reciprocate the skills by your other half.
Regards, Catherine.

Hi Catherine,
I was always under the impression that massage improves blood circulation - is that not true then?

Hi Dennis,
It does improve circulation short term so you would have to have several per week to feel that benefit. They are quite pricey for a session. £25 -£70 depending where. That doesn't mean that it could cure neuropathy.
Hope that makes sense.
Catherine.

Understood - thanks Catherine.

The best massage I ever had was after arriving in Australia. I did two twelve hour flights to get there and I was feeling rubbish. Had a short siesta and then my friends took me to Sydney Harbour. There is a market there called The Rocks, a must for anyone who travels to Sydney. The stalls are all interesting and there are some great bargains to be had.
There were two Thai girls doing massage and I sat on an upright chair whilst they pummeled away at my neck, shoulders and back. It hurt a bit and I was dubious that they were going to acheive anything. They charged peanuts and when the agony was over I stood up I felt a foot taller and all the aches and pains associated with the flights were gone. My posture was prefect again.
I would recommend it to anyone although it is a long way to travel for a massage.
Catherine.
