Foot problem on holiday....what to do...

Skype is a good option, I can skype from my mobile, (then again, the mobile itself is a lot cheaper than the satellite phone I use occasionally,(very occasionally now, you're lucky not to be arrested as a terrorist in most places)).

As to needles, I don't use them, but maybe it would be better to keep the one left before it goes in the sharps bin, and re-use that, unless you can source them locally?

@Jaylee ....more like the children's game Operation....fortunately I had a pair of tweezers with me but was still a tricky task...was waiting for buzzer (red nose) to bleep....
....saying that ....toe now resembles the red nose....looking red and inflamed now compared to other foot ...and he is complaining it feels sore....
 
When he says it feels sore, do you respond with "then see a doctor"?

Personally I think the idea of picking dirty needles out of a sharps bin makes me screw my face up. I think the obvious solution for him is to either keep reusing the one needle he has left, or he goes and gets some new needles. IMO it's not necessary for you to do anything about it.
 
@CatLadyNZ ...according to rep a doctor comes to hotel each day at 2.30pm so have suggested he goes and sees them tomorrow to ask about needles and show them toe....
....re picking needles out of sharps bin he does always put both protective caps over them before putting them in bin so actual needles are covered and not exposed....is just they are not as sterile or as sharp as new ones....is therefore not as bad as perhaps you think....not ideal I know but alternative is not to take medication....have extracted enough so only using twice maximum....
....unfortunately here on Cape Verde medical facilities are very sparse unlike some potential holiday destinations....

That does sound better, the plastic caps being on. When I was injecting insulin for my diabetic cat, I never put the caps back on because I couldn't do it without risking pricking myself with the needle.

Sorry to hear medical facilities are sparse there. I'm too paranoid about needing medical care to travel anywhere like that. I don't even like going to places where you can't trust the tap water, lol. Consequently, I don't travel much.

....despite saying earlier he would see doctor this afternoon he now says he won't bother and will phone podiatrist for appointment when he gets home....chances of getting appointment straight away on Friday I would think are remote especially as he won't make call until almost midday (arrive back very early hours of Fri morning)....
.....have warned him of dangers of leaving it and danger of possibility of losing big toe and how this would make balance and walking difficult....
....nothing more I can do other than go and sit on sunbed, finish reading my book and enjoy the last couple of days of my holiday....
 
I bet he has the I don't need GPS or a map thing, the I don't need a spirit level to put up shelves thing, and the I don't need to read instructions before assembling furniture thing. Molly you are a saint, I would have murdered him by now or at least marched him to a doctor.

tell him you're going shopping. You're either buying him socks or you're buying a hacksaw. Either way the foots being dealt with when you get back his choice which but either way its being sorted

and people are right you're a saint

P.S third opinion buy a shovel and bury him at low tide. High tide then deals with the problem and its cheaper than a divorce lawyer
 
@RYU ....love your suggestions......am not going to waste what is the last day of my holiday though......am just going to bury my head in the sand (not literally!) and ignore the problem for the next couple of days....he can then deal with it (and the consequences of not dealing with it) when we get home.....

....from a selfish point of view....and yes I can be selfish as well as caring....my concerns are sometimes drawn to thinking of the consequences of how this would impact on my life if ultimately it led to an ulcerated toe being amputated or worse...(would it mean that I would have to give up work and the other things I do because he is even less mobile / able to look after himself than he is now....)......perhaps I am not such a saint after all......perhaps the point I am trying to make is.....sometimes these issues don't just affect the diabetic patient but also those around them that Iive with them and love and care for them too....

....as for socks it would be a waste of my time and money buying them as he is absolutely adamant that he will not wear them despite having a drawerful at home....perhaps the podiatrist can convince him otherwise but I very much doubt it...

I would imagine your holiday plans are a little more detailed than the average backpackers...?!

 
To be fair I don't tend to go on holiday. I'm normally too busy planning and hoping that the the zombie apocalypse starts before Saturday. It has to start mid week after everyone has done the school run. preferably about 1pm a Wednesday afternoon, hopefully that way kid zombies get trapped in schools and office worker zombies get stuck in office blocks. It would make it easier to salvage additional supplies at a later date
 

Remember. It always seems to end badly when survivors from a ZA go scouting in retail outlets for supplies..!

Just to update....we arrived home today ....he did not get to see a doctor while we were away but promised that he would see podiatrist on our return....despite getting home at 5am this morning he still didn't get round to calling podiatry until 3pm and the earliest appointment they could give him was next Monday afternoon....can only hope that any infection there doesn't deteriorate any further over the weekend...and that when podiatrist finally gets to see it they can do something with it...
....is two problems....blister under ball of foot on one foot ...and blister under hard skin on big toe of the other foot....if either are or become a problem it will be down to his decision not to do anything about it earlier...

....please note....I did not make the call to podiatry or wake / remind him any earlier in the day as had made the decision over the last few days that this would be down to him to deal with now....at least now we are safely back on home soil......I had far more interesting things to do with my day today....like washing ......three loads done so far / more to go....and collecting cats from cattery....
 
You go Girl ... learn to let go ... If things were the other way round do you think he would look after you
(Hope his feet get sorted out ok without you needing to run around after him.)
 

Yes, it's very easy for others to say 'cut him loose', but you then have to completely cut yourself loose from the consequences.
That's a really big step, and one it's hard to go back from.
