FOR THOSE ON INSULIN WISHING TO HOLD/REGAIN CAT 2 LICENCE

Hello all!

I've been a Type 1 for nearly six years now. I was a bus driver previous to diagnosis. In accordance with current driving laws I had my PCV licence revoked....and have been miserable ever since. Indeed, I gave up any hope of changes to UK driving rules.

This morning however, I burst into floods of happy tears after reading how the Government is actually seriously going to consider ammending the rules to allow insulin-users to be assessed individually with regard to Group 2 licences. We have to meet a 5-point criteria and pay for assessment by a diabetologist, etc, etc. This is great news for all those who wish to drive lorries/buses or indeed regain their licences. Indeed, this has to be THE HAPPIEST DAY OF MY LIFE TO DATE!! Sure it will take a while to change the rules, but its closer now than ever! I have written to my local MP to confirm what I have read, but its on the DVLA website. I had to read it about 50 times to make sure it was real!! Its the most promising thing I've read!

I hope to be back behind the wheel asap!

Well, I still work for my local bus company (albeit in a different role)....so a return to driving has never been far from my mind!! I still get to drive buses around our depot yard...just not on the road! I lost my licence when I was 25. Up until then, it was the only thing I'd ever enjoyed doing. I would gladly pay to be assessed yearly in exchange for the job I love.

I am just so happy.... for myself and others that have suffered at this blanket ban. Whilst the rules have not as yet been ammended, the time is dawning!!

We deserve to be seen as individuals, and treated as such.

In answer to your post, its documented on the DVLA's website. The changes probably won't come into effect until the end of the year, but they will happen. I've had communications with my local MP and beyond. Its a really exciting time for those in a similar situation to myself. I can't really pass on any more information than that. Diabetes UK should be aware of the forthcoming changes and post a link at some stage.

On the one hand, people like myself will be liberated and able to take back what was so wrongly taken from us, i.e Group 2 licences. However, there are also changes to car licences in that proposals are afoot to take away licences from those who suffer from 'severe and disabling' hypos, etc. Fortunately I am extremely grateful in that I still have full hypo awareness and have never once needed medical intervention, or indeed any intervention for hypos. I rarely, if ever have them.

So, whilst they will be relaxing the rules in some respect, they are also making them stricter. All in all, it balances out well in the name of road safety. We can be assessed as individuals, not diabetics.
