Forgot my basal this morning

I think I forgot to inject my basal (Lantus) this morning. It's just after lunch now. I realised just before lunchtime. My blood sugar has steadily risen to 15, now 11.7 and flat. What should I do? I am not keen to take it now because that will mess up tomorrow. I don't think you can take Lantus as a split dose, but maybe I should take half the dose now. Or should I just keep correcting with my rapid (Humalog)?
 
We can try and give you advice but it's best you contact your health team for this.

I am not on Lantus so cannot comment, sorry.

Personally, I have missed morning doses before (on a split dose of Levemir 12 hours apart) and only realised after lunchtime... Corrected my BGL with my bolus insulin (Novorapid) until my next basal was due. This does require continuous BGL testing though as to avoid hypos and obviously, hypers.

Good luck and don't worry too much. Keep an eye on your BGL though! I'd suggest readings every one or two hours.

That's what I did once after speaking with my DSN, you may still find that you need to correct until the basal kicks-in but just be aware that there might be a slight overlap when you take your basal in the morning, but if unsure your best checking with your own DSN.
 
I tried contacting the DSN at the hospital when I hurt my leg for advice on how much more insulin to take as I wasn't able to exercise. I left a message on their answerphone, and never heard from them! They promise to get back to me in 48 hours - which is useless anyway for today's query!

Could you try ringing your consultants secretary and ask them to get a DSN to call you back, it's not too late in the day to try.
 

Yes, that would be useless but have you tried today? Your post quoted above doesn't make it clear if you're talking about today or the last time you tried calling them. If you haven't called them today, at least, give it a shot.

Calling 111 is also a valid option.
 
A bit late now, @linda321, but have you seen the Novopen Echo? There's a bit on the end that keeps track of how many units you took and how many hours ago you took them. They should be available on prescription and I found them very handy when my memory was poor.
