So today I went to my GP for my confessional......

I hardly ever see him as its always the DN so I went armed with a list of things I wanted to cover in one hit.

  • Forxiga - refused - my HbA1c was "so good" at 51 which is apparently way under his target of 58, that he can't justify prescribing it to me
  • Statins raised its ugly head again and I bought myself some more time, pending a cholesterol test next week but was told as I had tolerated them previously with no side effects, I should reconsider going back on them
  • Pulse taken - Excellent....
  • I confessed to having taken myself off all my RA meds because my joint pain and inflammation had reduced so much since changing my diet. He replied telling me I should never apologise for giving up my medication (I think he was seeing £ sign savings!) as it is my body and I was making informed choices.
  • Liver scan requested
  • Co-codomol deleted from my prescription
  • Testing strips - refused more than 100 a month and told to cut back testing to 2 days a week now that my diabetes is so well controlled. He said to ignore the fasting tests, as it was my HbA1c that mattered... but as I got up to leave he asked if I'd like a prescription for some more! Hell yea!

2nd confessional with Consultant rheumatologist on Thursday...

Now to try and understand why my weight loss is slow and how to drop a few more pounds before my son's wedding in January

I laughed ( though in a sad way) as it seems funny how he wants you off RA meds and won't prescribe Forxiga but you can eat statins like candy- that wouldn't be anything to do with the pecuniary rewards tied to their prescription, now would it?

Why don't you post a typical few days' menus on here and maybe we could see what needs tweaking?

Ok, thanks @cold ethyl

On waking and after taking fasting bs - I large mug of hot water with squeeze and slice of fresh lemon

Breakfast - Individual pot of full fat Greek (usually Yeo Valley) with a few berries and flaked almonds. Bullet proof coffee made with 1 tsp coconut oil and 1tsp of Anchor unsalted butter

Mid morning - black coffee with splash of cream

Lunch - celery sticks spread with full fat Philly or home-made almond crackers with cheddar cheese, cherry toms on the vine, watercress or cucumber.

Supper - Home-made "lasagne" made with beef mince, layers of spinach and celeriac instead of pasta sheets, sauce made with cream and grated cheddar - no flour - with green salad

1 square of 81% or 90% dark chocolate and cup of coffee with splash of cream in the evening.

The occasional fruit infusion, liquorice or peppermint tea. No added sweeteners in drinks

I've given up drinking tea since going over to bulletproof coffee at breakfast so no longer (knowingly!) consuming any milk

1.5/2 litres of water daily

I seem to be able to tolerate a single slice of fried bread so once a week if I fancy a hot snack at lunchtime I'll have a fried egg on fried bread

I don't have much of an appetite which I put down to the metformin. I made the almond LCHF mug cake the other day, but it lasted me 3 servings over 3 days!

Well done on your confessional, and good luck with your next one. I agree with Ethyl's observations about the statins! I had a stay of execution with mine - a compromise between my GP and me, to wait for my next test results. They came back much improved. Odd that she hasn't called me in to discuss matters!!!!!!!

Looking at your meals above, I have only one thing to say ........ cheese! I have added cheese to my menu in order to gain weight, or at least to stop losing. It really is very calorific. Do you weigh your cheese portions and have you any idea how many calories you are eating? You do seem to eat a lot unless they are all small portions.

Thank you for that observation. I hadn't thought of cheese being the culprit - I thought it was safe. Eeeek!

I've been ignoring calorie counting as I thought we didn't need to with LCHF but according to MyFitnessPal my calorie intake is approx 900 daily. I've set it for 1200 but rarely reach it, although keep my fats, sugars and carbs pretty much within limit. I'd say they are small portions either because I don't have an appetite when serving up, or because I can't finish what is on my plate

I'll look at cheese afresh now, thank you.

I hope your GP calls you in very soon so that you can sit and gloat!

I'd just check those calories as unless each of those meals is no more than a tsp , I think you will be going over 900 cals with all that cheese and cream. My fitness pal can have some funny values attached to items, and also unless you weigh stuff, you may well be having bigger portions grab you think. An oz of cheese is nothing but is 120 calories! Both are great low carb foods but pretty high in calories so you do have to weigh out portions. Personally I'd knock off the bulletproof coffee ( some folks' cholesterol goes up on LCHF and various links from the Swedish dcic's site suggest this is the culprit so if you want to avoid statins might be an idea to skip this) - you can use lactofree milk in teas and coffees if you want a lower carb option. The other thought I had is that you could perhaps do with more vegetables. Ideally we should aim to fill half or more of plate with salad, or Low cal veg like cauliflower, cabbage, kale, spinach etc and a few higher carb things like peppers, leeks and so on.
Of course if you only have a small amount of weight to shift, it is going to be slower - maybe check out your calories more closely and then tweak. Don't go too low as that will only switch your metabolism into starvation mode. My mum dropped down to 1000 calories for her last couple of stone.

as I just said in another thread, I would balance the bullet proof coffee with another 2-3 tablespoons of cold pressed olive oil elsewhere,

cold ethyl has good points on not going to low in calories, also if 5 tablespoon of fats are too high, cut both the bullet and olive back

cholesterol

I wonder, like Ethyl, whether you are eating more calories than you think. But if not, surely 900 is too low and your body could well be in starvation mode, which means you won't lose weight easily. The recommended minimum for women is 1000 to 1200 a day.

Good luck!

PS I calorie count in addition to carb counting. I could not have done this without it. Whilst losing weight I stuck to 1200 a day, a bit more at weekends. I lost about 2lbs every week with no plateaux, total 4 stones. All I did was increase my fats just enough to make up the calorie deficit by not eating carbs.

Individual pot of full fat Greek 180(ish) calories
flaked almonds. 20g 100cal
1 tsp coconut oil and 1tsp of Anchor unsalted butter 80 calories

Breakfast 280 calories

coffee with splash of cream 1 tablespoon (?) 50 calories

Lunch - celery sticks spread with full fat Philly or home-made almond crackers with cheddar cheese, cherry toms on the vine, watercress or cucumber.

cheese, 50g, 200 calories

Supper - Home-made "lasagne" made with beef mince, layers of spinach and celeriac instead of pasta sheets, sauce made with cream and grated cheddar - no flour - with green salad

beef 300 calories per 100 grams
cream, 50 calories per tablespoon,
cheese, 100 calories per 25g

splash of cream in the evening. 50 calories per tablespoon,

That's 580 without dinner, and I reckon with a small amount of cheese, and cream for the sauce, even with 100g of beef, 4 tablespoons of cream, 50g of cheese, that could be another 700 calories just on the ingredients there.

I think you are getting to your 1200, unless the dinner is way out.

Thank you all

@douglas99 Will you move in with me please?!!

Looking at the packets left in my fridge, I calculate I used 50g of cheddar for the "lasagne" but the dish lasted me 4 days. It had spinach, celeriac, onions and peppers in it also, plus a green salad on the side.

For lunch I have 2 celery sticks cut in half, spread with approx 20g of Philly (I bought 2 tubs for the price of one 3 weeks ago, and still have half the second tub left Or an avocado with philly or a cheese triangle spread in the middle with pine nuts sprinkled on top. Or a couple of cold sausages with coleslaw and cherry tomatoes

But I've taken enough of your time, thank you everyone. Back to MFP to tweak some more, and conjure up an alternative to tonight's cauliflower cheese which is now off the menu until later in the week!
