Hi, I found out very late in my pregnancy I was diabetic 36 wks. When the midwife (finally) did a blood test I'd had high blood sugars for the few months previous. My son was born by c section and over 5 kg. I've since done 3 gtt's to be told ive got impaired glucose tollerance. I'm going to see my doctor again this wk but was wondering if anyone has an idea of how I got GD in the first place. When on the phone to a GP ive never met before his assumption was that I'm larger with a BMI over 30. My BMI is 26 so slightly over with a waist size of 30 inches. No diabetics in my close family and I was very active and fit prior to having my baby. With a BMI of 23. It's frustrating that the doctors can't seem to tell me how & why I got this and what to do next to prevent type 2.

Hi Natasha and welcome to the forum
In order to prevent the progression to Type 2 diabetes, I think you will find the following information we give to new members helpful especially the recommendations on diet and carbohydrates. It's difficult to answer the questions how and why. It's just one of these things that happen and we all make the best of it by looking after ourselves as well as possible.

Natasha. You have probably developed gestational diabetes, which is can happen to pregnant women (about 5% of women develop it). There is loads of stuff about it on the web if you just Google it. It occurs because of the demands for glucose placed on your system by your baby. It often goes away after pregnancy. and you don't actually say how long ago you gave birth. Anyway, it can result in longer term insulin resistance, and the best advice is to eat and live well. Follow the advice given by Daisy above. Get your BMI back to where it was and probably the Insulin Resistance will just go away. Don't expect it to happen overnight though. My wife had this condition and within 2 months her GTTs were normal again.
