GD under control but frustrated with hospital & birth plans

hi i'm new here and can only get on here tonight for the next week or so but wanted to ask anyway.

i m having my 4th am 31 wks and got GD with this one (never had it before, not even in risk but got tested as they are testing everyone as a trial). anyway its been 3ish wks and i'm keeping it under control with diet just the odd over 7.8 reading a couple of times a week but i'm learning what it is thats taking them up.
baby is coming just under average size on growth scan and following the right curve.

i'm waffling! so my biggest questions are....
1) as i get closer to 40wks is my body likely to struggle and am i going to end up on meds or am i likely to be able to continue to manage it with diet?
2)they want to induce me at around 39/40wks (if i stay off meds/insulin). i was induced with number 2 and although the birth was fine it left me and baby traumatised. why do i have to be induced? can i refuse? i just want them to go away and leave me alone. all 3 of my deliveries have been quick (from 90 mins to 5 hours)
3) how quick can i come home? i wasnt planning on staying this time and wanted to come home 6 hrs later. what will happen after delivery? they seem to be making a huge fuss yet i'm keeping it under control.

Hi there.

I may be able to help with a couple of questions.
Nobody can make you do anything you don't want to. If you don't want to be induced, don't. You need to talk to your Midwife and ask her to explain, in detail, the pros and cons of induction and waiting for your body to do it by itself. You may have other issues that may have an impact on you or the baby that only she and you know.
As for coming home after the birth, you can do that whenever you want. Nobody can force you to stay in hospital but ask them why they would like you to. Ask them to explain the advantages and disadvantages and then make up your own mind. HCP's in any dicipline can only ever offer advice and support, they cannot force you to do anything. The most important thing is for you to understand why they want to do what they want to do.

My friend had GD (I am type 1 so quite different) and she managed to control her GD with diet all teh way through. It did get a little more difficult towards teh end.

I am guessing, ther eason they don't want you giving birth naturally, is that there is a fear, as you give birth your BG may rise. this can cause teh baby problems, as they produce more insulin, so are born with low blood dugar hypoglycemic.

BUT I am only guessing, and as Anna said, you really should get them to explain teh pros and cons, then you can make the best decision for youand number 4.

Even as a type 1, the hospital were pretty keen to get shot of me, so, assuming everything goes to plan, there shouldn't be any problem you coming home after 6 hours...assuming you have had a poo, or whatever it is that you have to do!

thank you both. i am back from my hols and have just had a MW app. she found ketones in my wee but wasnt able to give me any answers. i wanted to know what the hos will want to do about it, i'm eating plenty and still keeping the GD diet controlled but having looked up ketones could they be there because i had only had breakfast an hour before the sample or that it was so hot yesterday i probably could have done with drinking more.
this pregnancy is just one big headache, baby is transverse or breech, i really dont want to go on meds for the GD, they want to induce me which i am really stressing over because of the last time. i just want everyone to go away and leave me alone. i feel fine, bloods ok, why do i feel so stressed???

Horrid to know you are still stressed, although it's not surprising.
I'm sure your Midwife has told you that before 36/37 weeks, the presenting part of the baby is not really significant. If s/he settles into any other position than head down, no Obstetrician will consider induction.
Midwives know very little about diabetes unless they have had the training or are a diabetic themselves. When she found ketones in your wee, did you test your BS?

I would recommend, if you haven't already done so, joining a baby forum such as iwantmymum or babycentre. Both are excellent resources and there will be hundreds of women going through exactly what you are.

I'd also recommend Association for Improvement in Maternity Services (AIMS) and The Association of Radical Midwives (ARM) for more unbiased info than you possibly need and some much needed support.
