Hey All,
I was wondering if there were any known links between gestational diabetes and type 1 diabetes?. I had gestational diabetes during all 3 of my pregnancies and was warned at the time that I had a high chance of developing diabetes later in life. My mum is also a type 1 diabetic which increased my odds. I've just been diagnosed as a type 2 (based on a fasting blood test of around 9) at the age of 28. I do carry extra weight which I understand is thought of more as a type 2. My Mum was also diagnosed at a type 2 at first (at the age of 31). She was also overweight at the time and she had gestational diabetes when carrying my sister and I. She's now underweight and has been heavily insulin dependant for almost 20 years. I guess I'm just wondering whether these facts increase the odds of being a type 1.
At the moment I still haven't seen a diabetic nurse, and I'm unlikely to until at least the 6th of December as she's away on long term leave and there's apparently no one else to deal with a newly diagnosed diabetic. I've only had the one fasting test but I demanded a Hba1c test so that I had the results waiting for when I could book an appointment (still waiting on results). My mum also gave me a spare blood glucose monitor so I've taken an active approach and have started doing at least a fasting morning test and after food test. My morning one today was 11.7 and then 15.1 an hour and a half after food. I realise this is high but is this higher than normal for newly diagnosed? I feel like I've been abandoned at the moment! especially when I hear of others who are immediately put onto tablets/referred to dietitian/onto a course all within their first appointment and I was just given a 'btw you're diabetic' and a 'oh the nurse isn't available for weeks' response. Is this normal?! :?
Thanks in advance!!
Laura
