Getting lost.

You could be on to something there. Doctor put me on pills to stop panic attacks, at the end of June. I don't want to be taking more pills, so we agreed that i should take just one pack to get me over a stressful time at work. I've been off them for almost four weeks.

I don't want to go back on them. I need to try and get my head straight without. - My mother ended up going on loads of pills after she was diagnosed. - Thirty years later she's still mad as a fish!

We all have a glitch now and then. It's good to hear you are getting over yours.

Lorna and I (ooo, look at me using proper English!) went to a concert in St. Columb Major last night. It was given by a group of musicians called Harmoniemusik. (harmoniemusik.org.uk) Fantastic! They will give another concert on Thursday evening and the last one on Saturday evening. I love these intimate concerts, sometimes we sit in the front pew, take your own cusion, and the stage is only 12" high and 3 feet away. I have even helped get the piano off the stage at the end of the concert! I hope you have an opportunity to relax Hornplayer. Sunday will see us take both of Lorna's Austin Sevens to The Lizard for a car display. We start off in a convoy from Helston and drive to The Lizard with about 150 other vehicles ranging in size and age from old bikes and tractors to some more modern machinery. It's to celebrate the first commercial bus service in Britain being formed in 1903. It's hard to imagine a bus 110 years ago driving the route we take. Such a fantastic spot to be too. On a clear day it's as though the sky and sea are one right across the horizon. There are videos of the event on youtube, but being there is better!

My wind quintet does concerts in one of the south Gower churches. They give us the rehearsal space free so we do the music for Easter, advent, etc. - The only church in Swansea with its own 5tet, they are very proud. I like the concerts we do there best. We have a very good audience, lots of regulars. I tend to do all the talking during concerts, ( short straw!) It's become more like a meeting of friends than a formal concert. Nice. I play with a full symphony orchestra in one of the big churches too. We don't meet for rehearsals, just one on the day, but we pull players from all over South Wales so the standard is extremely high. The atmosphere isn't as intimate as the church seats about 250 and tends to be full, but it's always the regulars who come up to chat after.

Live music of any kind can't be beaten. We have everything around here, jazz and folk festivals, chamber and orchestral. I can count six brass bands within 10 miles of my house, two of which are championship section. There are theatre companies every where, so many musicals going on that I don't get anything more than Sunday night off for weeks at a time. ( gets interesting when you're teaching full time too!) - starting end of Sept, I've got a G&S, Carousel, an opera, Miss Saigon and Phantom of the Opera, before Christmas, and another Phantom, Jesus Christ Superstar, Westside story, miserables and one of the really old ones, in for next feb, March and April.

We're really lucky to live where we do.

I am feeling better. I'm eating better and I'm getting stuck into all the prep for next term. Picked up two new schools and dropped my least favourite so I'm up to fifteen now. They all need stuff to play at Christmas, - some just one piece, but some expect more, - I've got three brass ensembles in one school and they do concerts all through the year. One of them is a bit good. They get loaned out for community events. That's great, but I arrange all the music for all my groups, as I like to stretch all the players, not just the top trumpets. - Sometimes the tubas are better than the trumpets so they sound better with purpose written stuff. LOTS of work for me. - Hey! - It's no wonder I'm a basket case!!

out of interest does lorna do ironing? my wife is terrible at it we could time share
 
this is tough hornplayer, its almost easier to help folks that are completely lost, you on the other hand know what to do, have done it and bought the t-shirt, I understand totally the feeling im almost feeling it myself, do you have targets? I have achieved my targets and therefore starting to feel like I could slip off the log, im trying to focus on exercise and have made a 10k goal, not sure how that's going yet im on the verge of committing, it was easy when I had a mountain to climb but now everyone especially the wife keeps telling me ive made it, its hard now to have a focus, are you able to exercise? because I find it makes you lose weight without trying to lose weight, apart from that im at a loss im afraid, I wished I could help though

Thanks Andy, exercise is possible most days and you're right, it does help. Had a riding accident a few years ago. Did nasty things to my back and hip. Some days it's fine, some days it hurts and some days it hurts so much I want to cry. Ironically, those are the days I know I'm doing something right! - I have a friend who's an orthopaedic surgeon. Apparently, as I lose weight ( the weight I gained after the fall ) my posture changes and that's when it hurts the most. If I just push through it, I win. I was doing great with it, no pain for weeks, then I was out in Paris on a trip with a bunch of kids at the end of term and I jarred it. The journey back was really funny. - Whenever we stopped. I had to be helped up and down the coach steps, I could barely stand! The kids were great, ( aah, my boys. ) fetching stuff, etc, they didn't take the mick once. ( - I did buy the hoodie they found me in Disney though. The one with GRUMPY written on the front and an axe wielding dwarf on the back. Does that say anything about my teaching style do you think? ) At the moment I am up to my eyeballs in prep for next term, and "getting my lip in" ready for a big concert next week. The gym isn't a priority. I'm dog sitting this weekend, so there are walkies in my future!

Setting goals is a great idea. Congratulations on hitting yours!!! My brother was a rugby player. He needed a knee op, so he set himself the target of losing some weight before the op. He lost 9st and didn't need the op any more. He'd always been fit, but he decided to try and do one ironman competition before his knee gave out on him. - He wanted the tatoo. It's now four years on and he does 3 competitions a year, plus loads of marathons and half marathons. He does extreme kayaking too and goes bass fishing in our local estuary by swimming against the tide from sandbank to sandbank. ( yes, I have had to go pick him up a few times when he's missed his footing and got carried a bit further than expected!) He still doesn't need a knee op! So far, he is the only member of my family ('cept my Dad) who doesn't have a diagnosis of diabetes. I don't know if he is or not. His diet is so strictly Primal that it wouldn't show up if he was!

I'm not suggesting you skip the 10k and head straight to ironman, - brothers wife is extremely unimpressed with his training schedule, but it shows what you can do if you set your mind to it!

- oh, and don't buy clothes that crease!!

I must admit to being baffled by your remark. I see it as a website dedicated to helping people with diabetes, with an extra section for those who want to share other aspects of our lives that cross. I enjoy it very much, don't you?
 

If I were an outsider, then I would feel very uncomfortable. But, that's the way the site likes it. As you you say, who cares?
 

Are you saying this is like the 'freemasons' on the site?

Fair enough. If you guys think you are offering a welcome, then who am I to argue. Wish you well.
 

We've tried to offer our experiences as a community but if you don't agree with them then it's not our fault-it's a forum and not a hospital here.
 

I'm really sorry Mireille, if you find our chat strays too much off topic. It isn't meant to be off putting to a newbie.

Those of us who cross paths fairly often get to know each other just a bit, in obviously, a very small way. You'll do the same, if you hang around. Yes, some of our conversations could be conducted by Personal Message, but they aren't of a private nature and we welcome and really enjoy the input of anyone who cares to comment. It's all about getting to know and support each other. It isn't just a dry, question and answer session. There are some fantastic people using this forum. We are more than our condition.

If there is anything, here, in this thread in particular that is nudge-nudge and you feel needs clarification, please quote it and I'll do my best to explain it. Nothing here is meant to exclude, more to invite you to play!

Agreed Irw60. It helps to have people to talk to that are in a similar situation and can offer advice. It's great just to have a chat about other things too. I think this site helps to make diabetics feel not so alone.
