getting my licence back

Hello. Last year I had a hypo at the wheel for the first time ever. I crashed. Thank God nobody was hurt. Inevitably, and perfectly reasonably, I lost my licence. I have spent the last year really getting a grip on my condition, and can now reapply for my licence. Consultant will support my reapplication. Can I ask if anybody else has been through this, and what happened with the reapplication? Will I get my licence back, or can I expect to be knocked back by DVLA? I must stress that I wouldn't reapply if I didn't think I was safe to drive again.

Hi,

sorry to hear that happened to you.

When first diagnosed i battled for a year for the DVLA to accept i was fine to drive. I have no idea why because i have never had a disabling hypo. never collapsed or required assistance!

Three medicals and 12 months later i was happy to receive it back

The DVLA look to medical professionals to decide if you are fine to drive, so if your consultant is fine with you driving then they should be happy for you to drive too, i would imagine maybe they will request you re-new your licence every year as you had this accident, my licence is re-newing every 3 years.

If you are only having minor hypo's and have good hypo awareness then i don't see why you shouldn't drive.

Remember always test before you drive and frequently inbetween. i'm certain you already know this but i feel obliged to remind when talking about diabetes and driving

The only thing you can do it be HONEST on your application and see what happens. There's not alot you can do to swing it in your favour apart from holding back some truths.

Good luck i hope you get it back no problem!
