I dont know if i am still able to give blood for the National Blood Service. I was diagnosed with Type One Insulin Dependent Diabetes in March 2009 at the age of 19 and before I was diagnosed I was giving blood often.
Help Please?!

hi, if on diabetic meds im 99% positive you cant give blood :?

Hi Hawalkden

I have just telephoned the National Blood Service who confirmed that Type 1 Insulin Dependent Diabetics cannot donate blood.

Diabetics who are controlled on diet and/or some oral medication can be considered as blood donors but on an individually assessed basis.

If you wish to speak with the National Blood Service to clarify they have a 24 hour donor helpline on Tel: 0300 123 23 23.

Hi, I can confirm this to be true as I was turned down last week for blood donation! They have a yes/no check list and Type 1 Insulin dependent diabetics are at the top of the 'No' list - which is a bummer! They did say that the rules do change and have changed and probably will change again so you can register and they will keep in touch
