My levels used to be a lot higher, 7.6 in June but then I found this forum and started low carbing, and have got my HBA1C down to 6.3 - I asked to have my meds reduced and the diabetic nurse agreed although she wasn't that keen. I am now trying to come off my Blood Pressure meds, maybe at my next test in 3 months time.
I think if you can demonstrate to your specialist that you are consistently getting good numbers (spreadsheet or logbook or phone app) then you should be able to get meds reduced. At the end of the day, its your body, if you don't want to put that stuff into it you don't have to, although from what I have read Metformin can have a protective effect on your heart.
