I do not have diabetes
Hi, my husband has just had his blood test results, glucose level after fasting is 15.8. Is this a concern as Receptionist advised an appointment with Doctor, earliest appointment is on Monday evening?

Yes I'm sorry to say it is high but nothing that with a bit of work that can't be brought down.
Is he diabetic or is this his first blood test for glucose ?

Hi jacbrian and welcome. A level of 15.8 is rather high - but not as high as some people are on diagnosis, so don't panic. You can find out about normal levels here, http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes_care/blood-sugar-level-ranges.html
Your husband should definitely make an appointment to see the doctor and, in the meantime, avoid all sugary things. In due course, he may like to consider a low carb diet. This is an approach which has helped many on this forum to achieve excellent, indeed normal, blood glucose levels.

very high - book an appointment to see the doctor asap. Did they also do an HbA1c test? If not I expect the doctor will order one PDQ.

Thanks for replying, this is his first test

Hi, thanks for replying, hes made an appointment, Monday evening is the earliest available, I was just worried that this reading was high and perhaps he should see a Doctor sooner?

It is high, and waiting until Monday is a long time when you are worried, but the best thing he can do in the meantime is cut out all cakes, biscuits, sugary soft drinks, puddings, and anything else with sugar in it. This will be a great start and his blood sugars will start to fall. Doctors do differ in their degrees of helpfulness and in their response, so "cut out the sugar" may be all the response he gets on Monday!

OK thanks Sally, I will make sure he cuts right back on the sugar

It's difficult at first and everyone has their own approach
It was easier for me as I live alone and I loved my sweet treats the very first thing I did was empty the cupboards of all cakes cookies etc and stopped having two heaped teaspoons of sugar in my tea and coffee. Not easy at first then I found this place and some great people and great advice.
Please ask any questions you want too and someone will be pleased to give you help.
Above all don't worry.

Hi and welcome

Unfortunately your husband's fasting glucose count is high and suggests that he is diabetic.

This is not good news, diabetes is a serious condition but it is not the end of the world. It is a condition that can be managed and allows for a full and satisfying life, provided you learn to play by its rules - generally adopting a healthier lifestyle, a better diet, more exercise, shedding of any excess weight.

The amount of information/advise facing the newly diagnosed may be a bit overwhelming at first but this is not the time to worry about that. You will have plenty of time to get on top of it.Besides people on this forum never tire of explaining things and offering the benefit of their experience.

For now try to keep calm and wait for the doctors appointment and the likely confirmation of diagnosis. As others have suggested stay away from sugary things and try not to have too many carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, rice especially of the white variety.

One word of worming, a diabetes diagnosis can be an emotional roller coaster at first. It is not uncommon for the newly diagnosed to go through the full range of the stages of grief: denial, anger, guilt, bargaining before finally reaching acceptance and hope. So be prepared for some ups and downs probably for the both of you.

Just remember you want be the first to go through this and we will be here for any support or advise you require.
