Hello everyone, I was diagnosed with pre diabetes about six weeks ago. I went for a routine blood test and my doctor told me my blood sugar had been rising over the last year and now I was borderline. ( Would have been nice if he had told me months ago ) .
I asked about a glucose monitor and he said there was no need for one. I think he said my level was 8......
I have been trying very hard with my diet for the last six weeks, but yesterday I felt very unwell, shaky, and just not with it.
Today I did feel better, so I went out and bought a monitor. My level was 5.5, so I must be doing something right.
The chemist said my doctors practice should be paying for the monitor and test strips etc, does anyone know if he is correct ?

Hi and welcome,

Well done for buying a meter - this is your best tool for managing your blood sugar levels and testing out different foods to see which you can cope with.

Very few diagnosed type 2s are given meters and strips on prescription, I'm afraid. We have to self-fund. Your chemist was correct in that your doctor "should" give you a meter, but sadly this is not the case in reality.

Very few type 2,s are given a meter and strips from their gp. My meter is my best friend
