7.1 is either good, bad or indifferent depending upon where you look!
Modern medical thinking is that a 6.5 or above result needs treatment, either by diet and excercise or medication.
You need to see your Doctor and discuss it with him/her.
I would think another Hba1c is possible and maybe a glucose tolerance test, ask the Doc. for a diagnosis, it should be straightforward and will help you make your choices.
My Diabetic Nurse put me on Metformin after a result of 7.
As Hanna said, 7.1 is not bad, but it not good either, remember, the earlier you start treatment and the better you control you BG the better the long term prognosis is.
