Hi, I've been diabetic for some 8 years now and have recently been put on a Disposable Insulin Pen. I am still on medication of Metformin (6x500mg a day and 2 glicazide a day). I am new to Insulin and although very nervous at first, am getting the hang of it. My readings for the last 3 years have been very high (in part due to Cancer of the womb in 2009 and a badly infected Gall Bladder which had to be removed). I had a total Hysterectomy and have been clear for three years. I had Radiotherapy (both internal and external) and apparently this may have been the cause of my fluctuating sugar levels. Since taking the Insulin (now on my 4th day) my levels have dropped considerably. I was originally on 10 units twice a day and after four days, it was increased to 12 units twice a day. I'm monitoring my levels daily and am delighted to see them back in single digits. Can anyone tell me if I have to wait 20 mins from the time I inject to the time I eat? My doctor told me to wait 20 mins what is the general consensus? Also, is alcohol totally not allowed - I forgot to ask my Doctor. I'm speaking to him again on Friday, so I'll probably get answers to my questions, but just wanted to check on here.

Hi Sassco and welcome to the forum. I'm sure someone will be along soon to answer your questions.

Hi Sassco, welcome to the forum! I can't answer your questions I am afraid - but just wanted to say hellooo. Sounds like you have been through a lot in recent years, hopefully now things are looking up.

Hi, thank you for your kind & welcoming words. I'm sure I'll get some answers from my GP, just wanted to get some info from people who had direct experience of insulin.

Welcome to the forum Sassco

What insulin are you using?

Hi,
I use humalog 25 twice a day before meals. The ideal is 15 minutes before eating however it is ok immediately before or even straight after the meal.
Alcohol is ok in sensible amounts, I have a couple of glasses of dry white wine of an evening which barely affects BG levels, sometimes it helps to keep levels down though probably best not to make a habit of it! Be careful if you have more than that as levels can drop quite drastically over the next 24 hours. It is always best to either drink wth your meal or make sure you have carby snacks while you drink and test before going to bed, if low have another carby snack.
Hope this helps, having diabetes doesn't mean you can't enjoy yourself

Hi,
M3 has quite a slow onset so the manufacturers suggest 30min before a meal. If you take it immediately before eating you may find that your glucose rises quite high before the insulin is at it's peak action. This is taken from a booklet issued by lily

You can see when the peaks occur (and also that there is less active insulin at lunchtime)
I couldn't link direct but you can find the booklet if you google :A guide to starting M3
