GTT with a cold?

Hi

Should I wait until I have got rid of my cold, (sore throat, runny nose and aches) before I go for my 3rd GTT? Will it effect the result?

I have had two, 3 months apart, and it's time for my 3rd this week, but with feeling rough I have put it off, but this cold is lurking so don't know if I am going to have to go and do the GTT anyway.

Bit of background, I had Gestational diabetes with my 2nd pregnancy, ended up on insulin in the last 8 weeks of pregnancy, but it went after the birth. I asked if I should be tested regularly as they told me I would more than likely end up diabetic, but the doctor never sent me for a test, until I mentioned it (5 years after birth). Came back 'borderline' can't remember exact result, think the fasting was 6.7 an 2 hours later 6.9 , 2nd test the nurse said my fasting had gone down (6.2 I think) but my 2hr reading was higher, so I would need a 3rd GTT and if it came back the same I would have to see the doctor and probably end up on medication. I was just told by the nurse to use diet control....given a quick portion size talk, cut out sugar and that was it! Should know it all from gestational diabetes but I seem to have forgotten most of it! I do have my meter from then, so got a new battery and some test strips from ebay. So I am going to try for myself and see what results I get.

Thanks for any advice!

I personally would wait until the cold has gone. When you're poorly the level can be slightly elevated so you could get a false reading!

I was in the same boat, gestational on insulin for 12 weeks then got diagnosed Type 2 10 months after birth

Let us know how you get on x

Well, after ending up on anti-biotics for a chest infection, I finally got tested on Tuesday! Had a phone call to make an appointment with the doctor, fasting was 6.8 and 2 hours later it was 7.2 ... So see what the doc says on Tuesday....

Will be interesting to see what the doc says. Although your fasting level is higher than it should be, your 2 hour result would be classed as normal. (7.8 is the upper limit for "normal".)

Seen the doc, I am not 'diabetic' but 'insulin resistant' when fasting....
Told me I could go on medication if I wanted, but wouldn't be classed diabetic. Told me to lose weight, asked if I wanted to see a Dietician, to which I told him I had done the vitality course, so knew what I 'should' eat and portion control etc, so he said to keep trying to lose weight, offered me tablets if I wanted them, ones that bind the fat but have severe side effects, to which I said no, my sister had been on them and I didn't want them!

My HBa1C was 44, he said 40 and below was normal, 48 and above would class me as diabetic. So got to have another test on 3 months and see.
