Only diagnosed T2 a couple of months ago but I am losing a lot of hair To be honest this had started many months previous and I should have suspected something was wrong then as my hair is always the first thing to show any health change.

However, although I know why - I would like to know if anyone else has suffered the same and how they coped with it. My hair is cut short and I am now using a volume shampoo and volume conditioner to help my thinning locks to at least appear less thin - I haven't exactly acquired BIG hair but at least it is "bigger" which is great for my self esteem.

Would a supplement help - if so which one? I feel like a molting cat!!

The website is very informative and has given me a few ideas to follow up.

Thyroid levels ok - they are checked annually alongside my cholesterol and taken just 2 months ago so all ok on that front.

Before I was diagnosed with diabetes, I actually had a bald patch appear on my head. I was mortified, even though my long hair covered it up. I was just told I was going through an early menopause. At that time, I was also told I had type 2 diabetes. I didn't and I wasn't going through the menopause either.I now know alopecia areata is an auto-immune disease, as is my Type 1 diabetes.
Hair loss can be very distressing but often it is just a temporary blip, as I hope yours will turn out to be. Although the bald patch never grew again, the rest of my hair is normal thickness and it's probably only me who is aware of my small smooth patch.

Hi Ros

What kind of hairloss do you have, is it all over? patchy? in certain places?

When you say your thyroid levels were normal, did you actually get the numbers and the test range or did the GP just say 'normal'? Many thyroid patients find that what GPs consider 'normal' can often be markedly different to what is actually normal for the person concerned.

Also have you had your ferritin levels checked? There is a connection between low ferritin and hair loss. Again try and get the actual number of your test result (and the range) as what GPs consider to be 'normal' is not necessarily normal.

Re: hair loss UPDATE

I am very pleased to say that over the last two months my hair has decided to stop dropping out and is now well on the way to becoming a lion's head of hair once again! It's stronger, thicker and the shine has returned too. I continue to use volume shampoo and volume conditioner (because I like it). As I had suspected - its condition reflected my health and it was just a matter of time before it all turned round again and settled down.

Thanks you all who replied and grant patience to all who are presently suffering the indignities of hair loss.
