Halogen ovens

I have been looking at halogen ovens for quite a while. I have hummed and ha'ad about getting one for a while. Anyway, I have finally given in and bought one. I got the first one home, it didn't work, an auspicious start after my indecision but when number 2 arrived it was fine.

I confess I am still a bit humming and ha'aring about it, even though it's now sitting in my kitchen, so what do people think of them? A friend saw it and began telling me about a work colleague of hers who "uses it daily and wouldn't be without one" but when asked why my friend didn't have one if she was enthusing about one to me, she went quiet. :lol:

Are they as good as some people claim, or have I bought into the kitchen gadget hype? (I am so guilty of buying kitchen gadget hype ).
 
I've toyed with the idea of buying one of those as they're supposed to cook really nice rottisserie style roast chicken in a much quicker time but I haven't met anyone who has used one yet for a verdict,would be good to hear your verdict Jo.
 
Well, I can't help you with the chicken Paul - yet, although I do have a beautiful organic chicken breast with my name on it for dinner tomorrow evening.

Youngest daughter asked for some of those American fries for dinner, the skinny things like they serve in McD. So reluctantly and biting my tongue so not to give her the carb lecture AGAIN :yawn: I agreed. I put them on the tray that has holes in it, like a pizza tray, put the temperature and timer on and cooked the rest of us a healthy dinner :lol: The oven pinged, and I served up the fries, which were proclaimed really tasty and not as greasy.

A success? I will reserve judgement, but so far 1-0 to the oven.
 
Hi Defren!

I have one - it was a present from my mother. I do use it for various things and it is quite good. I get fed-up getting it in and out of the cupboard and it would be very easy for me to push it to the back of the cupboard and not use it. I don't think I would buy one, but it does cook well and is quick, clean and economical. I've just decided I should use it more :lol:

Have you tried a whole roast chicken in your Halogen oven yet? The adverts make it look so good and quick don't they! :lol:

Thanks Smidge. I am still undecided but a bit less so than I was. It's so easy to clean, it even has a wash cycle on the settings, but I just walloped it in the sink with plenty of hot water and Fairy and it was clean as a pin in seconds. I am becoming more impressed with it, and I have stood it in the middle of the hob so that it is the easiest cooking method, apart from by George (Forman) or the steamer. If it's the easy option I am likely to give it another go, if the hob was available I would automatically go for that. I have stored some home made bread in the oven, again so the easy option is the halogen oven.

I know me sooooooo well :wink: :lol:

I haven't cooked a whole chicken in it yet as I usually use chicken breast pieces because I don't really like the brown chicken meat. (I know, I know, too bloody fussy :lol: ). My mum has cooked one and says it's great. I tell you what, I'm not around much for the next couple of weekends, but I'll cook a whole chicken in it in a couple of weeks time and let you know how it goes.

I do use it a lot for cooking sausages, because I get fed-up with the flippin' things exploding all over the ordinary oven and grill and causing a mess that has to be cleaned up. In the halogen oven, it is really easy to clean.

I've got a halogen oven and use it all the time. I'm on my own & it is quicker and much cheaper than my conventional oven. Also much easier to clean.
You have to experiment a bit to get timings right and to work out which 'shelf' to use and when to use the extender ring but most things have been successful, especially since I got a cookbook LOL
Mine sits in the corner of my worktop permanently. I don't have a microwave so I also use it to defrost sometimes.
 
We've had a halogen oven for several months now and we woldnt be with out it, we now use it foor all our cooking as its just the 2 of us. We find it faster and more economical to use than the gas oven. We have found that we have to reduce cooking times and temp settings from those stated on packets and have had to do the same when baking cakes ect. As a rule of thumb use the high shelf for grilling and the low one for everything else.

Thanks everyone, sorry for not replying, firstly I was on holiday, then I can't lie I forgot about the thread.

The more I use the halogen oven the more I like it. It's biggest selling point for me is how easy it is to keep clean. It also doesn't take up a lot of room, and you can place things in the oven at differing heights that make cooking for a family who like different things a complete doddle. I think I probably would recommend them now.

I know Paul is no longer on the forum with us, but I still haven't cooked a chicken in it. :lol:
 
We cooked a whole chicken in our halogen oven today, it cooked faster than a normal fan oven even after we'd dropped the temp 5-10 degrees. Cooked a delicious boiled fruit cake in it too, allthough i did restrict myself to a small slice. :roll:
