had fluid behind their eardrum? Last week I went to see my Dr as I've just got rid of an ear infection and still couldn't hear anything. He said that I've got fluid behind my eardrum which is normally caused from congestion and a cold which I've not had. It doesn't help that I suffer from tinnitus and and the ringing in my ear sounds even louder then normal. He has prescribed me menthol crystals to put in hot water and inhale the vapours to clear it. I've been doing this now for a week 3 times a day and it has eased ever so slightly but still can't hear very well. Has anyone had this and if so, how long does it last for? If I can I will be going back to the Drs on Friday if no better as I'm going on holiday next week and would like to be able to hear properly.

I did, it was horrible, feels like your ear is bunged up. It took about 6 weeks to clear.

Oh really, that long. The doc said 4-5 days but nothing. It doesn't help that I'm partially deaf in my other ear and my hearing aid just gives me constant ear infections so I don't wear it. I'm kinda struggling to hear anything and have been outweighing wearing my hearing aid so I can hear, then suffer with an ear infection in one ear and a bunged up in the other or as I've decided to just carry on as I am till it pops and can hear again. Thanks for replying

It does feel like it needs to pop, but all I could do was wait it out. When I say 6 weeks - that's when I really noticed it had got better.

Is it what they call glue ear? It seems to be a childhood thing normally but I think the cause is similar. Hope it clears up soon, nothing worse than that feeling that your ears need to pop. I'm surprised he suggested menthol crystals though. I would have thought they would clear your sinuses and nasal passages, but I suppose they are all connected together with the ears. Wish I could suggest something a bit more possitive.

I do believe it's called glue ear in children because he said something about grommets and children and glue ear. There was something else he could of prescribed but couldn't as I have high blood pressure and take meds for it. The crystals do certainly clear everything though!
