2 points for you
"Eat plenty of starchy carbs and less fat" is the usual advice. It's WRONG! They won't admit they made a mistake, although Diabetes Uk are now modifying their advice [in the pipeline and not published yet]
Fat metabolism has Zero effect on blood glucose, whereas starches convert 100% to glucose.
It's even been shown conclusively that low carb diets help you to lose weight more effectively than low fat diets.
If you have any doubts, I recommend you try the lowered carb approach and see if it works for you[I predict it will. If you get hungry, increase your fats]
Second point:
Metformin is a very safe medicine, but it does have a tendency to cause digestive upsets[hence its nickname "Metfartin"]
That is why they tend to introduce it gradually. They know it won't bring numbers down fast or far.
However tightly controlled carbs can and does. Try it and keep a food diary to help you see what is working best for you.
Extra point
although high nutritional quality foods can be expensive, you can save by cutting out the empty calories, in cakes, biscuits, sweets, crisps etc. Better eat less good food than loads of rubbish. Cooking from raw ingredients is the economical way to do it.
Good luck!
