Hazy vision in one eye

Hi,

I'm Type 2, since May 2014, and for the last 6 weeks or so I've noticed a slightly hazy vision in my right eye. It hasn't got any worse or better.
At first I didn't think much of it; thought it may be dry eye, since my eye does feel relatively dry, especially when I'm tired. I've got some fake tears that refresh my eye but certainly doesn't alleviate the cloudiness.
I continued wearing my lenses (I know...) but binned them eventually to give my eyes a rest. The haziness does not go away when I'm wearing my glasses. My eye is a tiny bit red but doesn't look any different to my 'ok' eye
It's not blurry vision- I know what that feels like. It's as if there is a 'romantic' filter on my eye. There are no other symptoms: no pain, weeping, headaches, spots, floaters etc.
I've been to the doc and I have been given an appointment with the ophthalmologist on the 16th of August.
I did have my screening last month and it showed, as last year, some background retinopathy and a 'come back in 12 months'. I did have my symptoms at the time and thought it might have picked something up...
I'm worried sick and also wonder whether I'm dicing with my eyesight waiting that long for an appointment.
My question is: has anybody else ever experienced this?

Difficult to say what is causing the hazy vision but the Ophthalmologist will give you a proper diagnosis. As for the wait for the appointment, you could ring the Ophthalmology Clinic up and ask if you could be seen sooner, just say background retinopathy was mentioned previously to you in your eye screening checks and your concerned and worried.

Needless to say if your eye gets worse then you should go back to your Dr's or just go to A & E, the Dr's there will bleep the on-call Ophthalmologist to come and examine your eye. Good luck.

I'm going back to the doc to see if he can get me in sooner.
And yes, I will go to A+E if I feel things are deteriorating.

It was the advice I was given when diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy. Never feel like your wasting your Dr's time going back as your eyesight is a precious thing, again good luck.
 
I do feel a bit guilty but yes, can't go playing around with eyesight...

The receptionist said today 'you won't get in any sooner'. Well I'll let the doc be the judge of that. And if he can't help me, I'll walk into the local A&E and wait.
 
There can be a number of causes of hazy vision, cataract being one of the most common. As long as you have no pain and the effect on your vision is mild, I would take comfort from the fact that nothing apart from background retinopathy was detected at your recent eye screening. A referral for just over a month's time seems quite appropriate for your current symptoms.
 
Sometimes both my eyes go a bit hazy when driving so I assume it is my BS getting low and I just eat a sweet, or two, and it clears. I then find somewhere to park and eat something before carrying on my journey. I usually either eat something, or make sure my BS is a little higher than normal, before going on a journey. Unfortunately, sometimes I forget to take my meter and testing kit with me - perhaps I should keep a spare kit in the car.

I have another problem of getting "floaters" in either eye when reading - but again sweets tend to cure the problem. I was never really a "sweet eater" before becoming diabetic 20 years ago.

I never have low bs. And my hazy vision is constantly there.

I went to the doc today; she's going to write to the clinic and recommend they see me sooner than 5 weeks as my eye was also red. She reckons a cataract or possibly an 'itis' if some sort. She didn't seem overly concerned so I did walk away feeling better
 

Good morning Martha - you say you never get low BS. How low and how high do your BS go. Your problem might be linked to having too many HIGH BS. Your "normal" BS should be around 5.6, or at least under 7. If your BS is up around the 20's too often you are heading for trouble.

So, what is your LOWEST average BS and just how HIGH does your BS go?
 
I have had "hazy" vision in my left eye, like someone has put a veil over it. went to the opticians to be told I have cataracts in both eyes!!! never thought for a minute that was the case. But I have since been diagnosed with Proliferative Diabetic retinopathy in my right eye which required immediate laser surgery. The consultant who treated my eye also said that hazy vision can be an indicator of prolonged high BG levels, something I wasn't aware of, so I would say just keep checking to see what your levels are. I certainly do more checks now ( I'm a bit paranoid now). hope everything is ok with your vision

Interesting. The GP does suspect a cataract but she's not willing to diagnose it as such; she wants me seen by a specialist.

I DO have background retinopathy but my last one (June) said the same: some background retinopathy-come back in twelve months.

What did they do about your cataracts? Was it surgery?

Hello johnpol - As you are type1 you can ask your Doctor to prescribe a "Libre" for you under the NHS. With the Libre you can keep a closer check on your BS without the necessity of pricking your finger. With the Libre you can check every half hour if you want and it is very useful for building a graph on "when" your BS is rising - especially what type of foods cause high BS.

Look up LIBRE on the Internet for more information. If you buy it privately it will cost you about £100 every month - better to get a FREE supply from the NHS. Most type 1 on this Forum have one.

Hello again Martha. Those readings are not too bad - but try and keep below 7. EVERYBODY on this Forum is interested on how you are getting on - and they will give you some very good advice. Are you on the Low Carb High Fat programme? The LCHF programme will help you reduce "spikes" which happen after you eat carbs. Spikes can occur after you have eaten bread, potatoes, rice, etc and can force your BS up into the 20's.

You will only know the answer if you check your BS before you eat, 30 minutes after you eat, and 2 hours after you eat. If you do that every time you eat, your finger tips will hurt after a couple of weeks. Try asking your Doctor if you can have a "Libre" on the NHS - otherwise it will cost you £100 per month.

First of all try and build a graph of your BS when you test as I have outlined above - the Doctor likes to look at some evidence that you have a need for a Libre.

Meanwhile, keep cheerful (if you can).

Hi @Kyambala they are doing nothing about the cataracts at the moment as I have no adverse effects at the moment other than the veil effect over my left eye, I have a follow up appointment in August regarding my Retinopathy, so I will be asking about my cataracts and if anything needs doing yet.
 

Hi John. Depending upon where you live, the hospital can keep you waiting a couple of years before doing anything about your cataracts - but I would still advise you to try asking your Doctor if you can have a Libre on the NHS.

I have a Bayer Connect as it is linked into my pump (all these new fangled testers, am too old school) but I'm due a follow up app at the clinic so will be asking them about the Libre.
 
Update: I swung past the optician yesterday to get my eye checked.
They suspect iritis and I'm seeing the ophthalmologist at the hospital tomorrow at midday! My eye has got quite red and inflamed too over the last few days. Hopefully it can be sorted quickly.
