Hba1c 45

Hi I was diagnosed last year with HBA1C of 100 and finger prick tests across a couple of days in the mid 20s. I had ketones in my wee and I way unwell and lost a lot of weight. I was put on metformin and all was Going well with 2 further HBA1C of 37 then 38. I was took of medication and told to eat normally with no restrictions to help to get a better reading. I have had many symptoms chest pains, aches and pains, tired and so on since coming off and have been tested for all sorts with everything coming back as normal. HBA1C came back and I am 45 ?

I have ate like I did in the past as advised as DN thinks I am not diabetic and asked me to eat like used to xx

That was to get a true reading. Nurse told me not to change my diet. She doesn't think I am diabetic

With an HbA1c of 100 your DN thinks that you are not (T2) Diabetic! Did she say what else could have caused such high numbers? Or is she always an idiot? Unless the numbers you are quoting are mg/dl instead of mmol/l.

Wow let down again on this site. I understand what she is currently saying, at the time I was very high no doubt. However my last two HBA1C have been 38 and 37 with no diet changes and she said that metformin should not be able to do that by itself. So she is experimenting. I am sick of coming on here and people being negative or have something really bad to say. I really thought this site was to help people???

Hang on people! Just had a very quick look at Tanmc's previous vposts. I think this is a bit more complicated. Pernicious anemia was mentioned.

Thank you yes I do have pernicious anaemia and have had for a few years, one nurse said it would of affected my numbers by giving me a high reading as I was due an injection but another said it would of gave me a lower reading which left me confused.

@Tanmc diabetes is highly complex. Based on your original post, it did sound as though your nurse was a bit dippy! I can't comment much I m a relative newbie to the whole thing.

No offence but I don't see it like that. I have had many tests and I was very high last year at 100 HBA1C now all my readings have been brilliant with low metformin usage so she too me off to see what results would be without using meds or controlling diet and I think 45 is good. It was an experiment.

No offence taken. It's just a miscommunication. People reading this thread are unaware of you previous posts and your condition.

An HbA1c of 45 is pre-diabetic for most people, for you the figure is pretty meaningless.

I did ask whether she said something else could have caused this. As PA skews numbers this might account for it. As you did not mention this in this tbread.....

The site is to help people. You get a wide range of opinions from varied people, some very knowledgable, some less so, some speaking from personal experience, some guessing, some passing on heresay. There’s no rules to membership so most of us are not qualified to give advice, ask the right questions etc. It’s clear that most advice given is good, and given because people care, but if you expect some level of reliability from random contributors then prepare to be disappointed! The site can’t let you down, only your high expectations can do that, it is a forum, no more!

Erm - tested for all sorts with everything coming back as normal ...... the pernicious anemia??? I’m afraid the ‘site’ you say let you down was more ‘misled’ sorry to be harsh but saying ‘wow, let down’ is pretty harsh too.

You seemed to take this personal. I have had pernicious anaemia for years so already knew that. I have been tested for all sorts lately because of recent illnesses.

Also I made that statement as every time I have posted I have ended up even more confused or upset. So on that note am done it has not helped me

I’m really sorry if you felt I took it personally. There was nothing for me to take personally. I’ve seen loads of people get really good information here but if it starts confusing it’ll end confusing if you run out of patience before it all becomes clear.

Hi Tanmc, please don't give up just yet! It took me a while to interpret the (perceived) tone of some replies but I soon realised that many people are really passionate about each of us getting the best care possible and that means going to war against the NHS and DN's when we think they haven't diagnosed us properly. We hear of so many stories about people who appear to be clearly diabetic but are being misdiagnosed or fobbed off. I know for a fact that many contributors (especially Guzzler) zoom in when they think a 'diabetic' is being short changed. Believe me, it is done out of concern for YOUR well being and it would be a shame if you gave up. x

Haven't posted on this thread as I have nothing useful to add. However the diabetic nurse from my GP practice has recently left and we have a new diabetic nurse; well, that's what she calls herself. My HbA1c had been creeping up and was 7.0 at my previous visit and when I saw the DN she said "Your HbA1c is the same as last time and that is good, no need to do anything" and then started telling me what I should be eating, all high carb but we just go by the GI of the food so sweet potatoes etc are great. When I tried to speak she just cut me off with her "words of wisdom" and when she had finished tole me would see me in 6 months. If I followed her advice I doubt I would be alive in 6 months!!!

What suits one person may not suit another and when things are more complex as your seems to be Tanmc none of us are expert enough to give meaningful advice. I am a biochemist (now retired) but would not be qualified enough to comment .
