HBa1C and Haemoglobin

Hi all,

My latest A1C result was 34mmol/mol, which at first glance looks very good. Based on the blood sugar data from the Freestyle is should be closer to 40.

When I was given my results there was lots of other numbers including Haemoglobin estimation, which was close to the lower end of the normal range.

As the A1C test is based on the red blood cells can the low Haemoglobin estimation give a low A1C result and if so can this be taken into account when calculating the A1c?

I don't want to be happy with the latest results until I am certain they are correct.

Well done on your a1c that's a very good reading.
I don't think the two are connected but I am not sure. Someone will definitely be of more help than me, don't want to give incorrect information.

It's a lot better than July 2014 when the A1C was 118. I'm unhappy with some post meal spikes and fasting levels, but if the 34 is correct I must be doing something correct and pushing yards/dropping the a1c further may cause more harm.

Whilst HbA1c tests are usually reliable, there are some limitations to the accuracy of the test. For example, people with forms of anaemia may not have sufficient haemoglobin for the test to be accurate and may need to have a fructosamine test instead.

Interesting, thanks for the links. I've been finger tapping on purchasing a Haemoglobin home test meter and strips for occasional readings for a while now. Although, it will not tell you why your levels are out of whack, it provides leverage and reason for the GP to investigate if there appears to be a problem.
