HI ALL
I decided to take control of my health myself for about 3months now i have been having what i think are raised blood sugars
i had a fasting test done at doctors which came back as no action needed. I looked on the net and joined the forum through this and watching my blood sugar i decieded to go ahead and have an abH!c test done which i paid for myself. I had got no help from my doc
or practise nurse. When i told her that i had gotten a blood reading of 14, 2hrs after eating a roll and sausage, her advice was that she would get the same reading if she had eaten the same. So i sent the test and it has came back as 42 i think this is a little high
so i have as of today started low carbing. What i would like some advice with, is when is best to test at 1hr or 2hr or should i do both
Any advice would be great not asking for diagnosis i know my fbg are not normal range from 6.2 to 6.8 most days.
So its time to do something about it

THANKS TO ALL

Hi! If your dopey nurse WAS 14 two hours after a sausage and roll, she'd be diabetic or pre-diabetic too. Their lack of knowledge continues to astound me. We can't diagnose you of course, and you didn't ask us to (rightly) but your HbA1c suggests you are pre-diabetic or very close. So you are correct to take action now.
On the assumption that you pay for your strips, you don't want to use more than you need. I suggest therefore that testing 2 hours after eating is key. I wouldn't even bother doing FBGs other than now and again to see how things might be changing. 2 hours after eating, you should be getting BGs below 7.8; hopefully much lower, but If you're above 7.8, you had too many carbs in that meal so cut down then next time. Also check the type of carbs; starchy ones are out. Keep a careful record, so you can refer back. over time you'll get a picture of what you can and can't eat, and in what quantities, so won't need to test so often. Remember also that different people can handle carbs differently at different times! I can have a very carby breakfast, but get worse as the day goes on. Most are the opposite. So also test similar foods at different times.
Finally, remember you need a diet you can stick with for ever or the Demon diabetes will strike! So don't go too extreme if you don't need to. Live by what your meter says.
Good luck.

thanks grazer
i can honestly say that if it was,ent for this forum i would most probably just have let things slide and assume that i was being
paranoid after listening to the nurse and doctor . I am so glad i found you all . and i will do my very best with the diet and let you know how i am progressing I have found that my bedtime readings are always highest usually 8 to 10,8 so with lowcarbing i am hoping they will come down

If you have a component of insulin resistance, combined with Grazer excellent info, if you can fit in a walk somewhere in the day, you might find it increases how well your insulin works on your muscles, so if you aren't already doing exercise, try a brisk walk once or twice a day - as little as 15 minutes should help you out also.

hi milena
thanks for your reply i exercise every day i do an hour on the treadmill but have not been able to lose any weight i also joined
Slimming World lost 4lb over about 5weeks but it was so hard and i was really trying hard felt i was fighting a losing battle
i was paying 5 pound a week which could be better spent so i gave that up. but i am determined to do this lowcarbing and an added
bonus besides helping bg is losing some weight that would be great
thanks again for your reply

Agree with the exercise totally. Most blood sugar peaks occur about an hour after eating (we're not trying to measure peaks when we test, just where we've got back to at two hours) so an hour after eating my main meal of the day i do a ten minute only hard exercise session on a machine. You can do the same going up and down stairs, or do longer easier exercise like a brisk walk. I find this drops my BGs quicker and further. If your bedtime BGs are as you say, you need to make sure you don't eat within 2 hours of bed to give them a chance to go down, and do this 1 hour after eating exercise. If you're on diet only (which I believe you are) then high bedtime BGs usually mean higher fasting ones in the morning as explained to me by an endocrinologist. I suggest your bedtime BGs are much too high.
By the way, if you low carb, you will lose weight.
