hi. I have just had my results of hba1c test and it was normal 39 which I have had for the last few times. However over Christmas and beyond I have been hitting the carbs. The last three or four weeks I have got the diabetes symptoms back again extremely tired and my feet and hands are displaying the symptoms I had before diagnosis. I also have been testing these last few weeks and my levels were never below 6.5. (I have cut the carbs now), but still tired and higher readings. I do not understand the normal test result unless I have had some really low readings unbeknown to me. Would that be a correct assumption or is there another reason.

Hi @poppyducky It isn't likely that you are getting diabetic neuropathy if your HbA1cs are at 39 (non-diabetic). Even a few weeks with self testing bgs over 6.5 shouldn't lead to diabetic symptoms.
It could be something else, which might also be raising your bgs - an infection or illness can do that. You need to speak to your gp about your tiredness, and the symptoms in your feet and hands.

thanks
I did previously have much higher bba1cs in their 50s and 60s that's when I had these symptoms before now they have come back again but my recent hba1c - last week - was 39 - so either that's wrong or I have been getting a lot of really lows aswell as the highs when for the past few weeks on testing it has been 11s 9s etc- sorry did not explain myself fully.

The HbA1c can be inaccurate in some cases, especially if you have non-standard red blood cells (anaemia or iron issues for example) or certain other medical conditions (thyroid issues for example). Even if none of those apply it is only a sort of average and does not pick up on blood sugar levels that fluctuate wildly like a roller coaster, so as you say, you may be having a lot of lows that compensate for the highs as far as the HbA1c is concerned.
