Are you sure that was the figure they quoted? I ask because it is exceptionally high!

Elc is right. That figure just seems 'wrong.'

6 % / 42 mmol/mol / 7.6 mmol/L
8 % / 64 mmol/mol / 11.6 mmol/L
10 % / 86 mmol/mol / 15.5 mmol/L

your mmol/mol translates to an HbA1c (old style) of 14.96 and an AVERAGE blood sugar of 25.3.

That is VERY high.

Could it be a typo error?

I have a typo in my latest report stating that I inject 36 units of Humalog at each meal when it should read 3 - 6 units!

Ask to have a printout of the results in addition to the transcription you already have.

Mine was 12.6 at diagnosis so not unfeasible.

I'm a little confused because your profile says you've been diagnosed for a year, is this your first HbA1c in a year? If that's a mistake and you're recently diagnosed and put on insulin then a high HbA1c is not unusual following diagnosis and once insulin treatment is started and your readings fall into an acceptable level the HbA1c should fall as well. Have you been shown how to carb count and adjust your bolus insulin to cover the carbs you're eating?

If your results are really that high, I would 'teach myself' carb counting.

April this year is still very newly diagnosed so I'm sure that HbA1c will come down now that you're on insulin The HbA1c is an indication of what your average blood glucose has been for the past 2 to 3 months. When you were first diagnosed and shortly before, your blood glucose was probably very high and that's why your result is very high too. You want to see that number fall now as a high HbA1c long term puts you at a much higher risk of diabetic complications which you will want to avoid.

If you don't already have it get yourself a copy of the book called Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults (available at Amazon), it provides very comprehensive information about type 1 and is a must read for anyone who wants to get it all under control as much as possible. Don't be put off by the title, yes it's very good for children but it does cover adults too and all the information is very relevant to you.

And I agree about the carb counting, start teaching yourself now don't wait until later in the year for the course. Still go on the course but in the meantime start learning to count the carbs.
