Heart attack and stress don't mix

I had a heart attack in November 2014 and at the same time got diagnosed type2. Yesterday I went to see the Diabetic nurse who whilst I was there checked my blood pressure, which was perfect, tested a urine sample which had no signs of keytones, glucose or proteins and took a blood sample. She was well impressed with the printed out Blood Sugar results I showed her and all in all she was happy with the way things are going. However, this afternoon I got a call from the receptionist at my surgery saying that I needed to make another appointment to have another blood sample taken as there seemed to be a problem with the results of yesterdays sample.
The earliest they could get me in was 26th Jan, that's 12 days away. I have now got to worry about what has gone wrong for another 12 days, is that not classed as stress which is what I'm not supposed to get??
Anybody got any ideas of what the problem might be or is it like asking "how long is a piece of string?"
 
Maybe they just spilt the sample? -- it may well have nothing to do with you. I had to have a blood test for potassium levels FOUR times last year because the sample kept getting contaminated in some way or other. I really wouldn't give it a second thought at this stage -- instead congratulate yourself on the excellent test results. And get stuck into your cardiac rehab programme.....
 
I wouldn't worry. It may even be they forgot to do a particular test last time. Can you ring and ask for a phone conversation with your GP or nurse who should be able to explain things? That's what I would do. No point in stressing yourself if there is a way to avoid it.
 
It may not be an actual problem? honestly, if it was of a serious nature, you would of been called in. But it is the waiting that gets the mind going in overdrive mode. I had a mouth biopsy in the beginning of December and I have to wait 7 1/2 weeks for the result at the follow up appointment. I am absolutely sure all is okay, but I would like to know sooner rather than later, like everyone else.

I asked the receptionist if she could tell me what the problem was and she just said no but if I hung on a minute she would ask the GP. She then came back with "She can't discuss the matter over the phone, but she will let you know what you need to know after they have taken another sample and when you come in and see her". We then made a date for the 26th.
I think it's bloody ridiculous that they are allowed to play these cloak and dagger games with people. I am going to look into who to complain to as I did notice a complaints procedure notice hanging up in the surgery.

I say the same to you RRB These things are looked at by the appropriate doctors almost immediately and the results published on your hospital computer records. There is no reason to wait all those weeks worrying. I know that being in the Waiting Room is worse than the eventual result. Try ringing the appropriate consultant's secretary. You can get the number from the hospital switch board - they may put you through. The secretary will either tell you the result if she has the authority or make sure you get to speak with the consultant quickly, or at least get a letter. This is my own personal experience. Good luck with it.

I would call in or ring again and be very assertive (assertive, not aggressive). You are entitled to know this. It's your blood they want. Failing any information, ask (demand) an earlier blood test. It is ridiculous and unethical for you to be asked to give blood without being told why.
 

Thank you BT, but I dont think it's anything bad, like adrian and many others, it would be nice to get it over and out of the way, I think up to 4 weeks at the latest. Many thanks for your reply, I'm not a big worrier in that respect, so just getting on with everyday things. Just hope adrian is okay

Hi Bluetit, you're right I do need to find out and like you also say I'm entitled to know. I have the phone number sat on my desk here ready for tomorrow morning.

Yes, it's a waiting game, just try and think logically and positivly. I'm sure it will be fine and don't stress, lots of deep breaths and keep yourself occupied.

I'm far too impatient. I had my 2nd year post-breast cancer review mammogram on Monday and see the consultant on Friday, but what did I do this morning (Wednesday). I rang for the result and was given it over the phone. (All clear so far). I just hate waiting rooms.

I like the idea of deep breasts and keeping myself occupied. Do you think I should get my eyes tested while I'm there?
 
Great news for you then Eh. I sometimes think I'm too soft when it comes to pushing for results but I think in this case someone is taking the .........................................michael
 


Ring in the morning and ask for a call-back from your gp or any other in the practice.
 
Yes, I would get back to them in the morning - it's not fair to make you wait that long.
When that happened to me it was just because they had forgotten to test something!
They don't usually make you wait when it's something of concern, but get back to them on the grounds that it is causing you stress.

In the NHS if you don't ask you don't get. A lesson I learned a long time ago.
Don't forget to ask for a print out of all your results if you haven't already. That's another lesson I learned ..... doctors filter stuff out if they think you won't understand or don't need to know and are too fond of saying "it's fine" when I prefer to work out for myself if it's fine.

And if necessary go to the Practice Manager if you don't get a satisfactory response. Hopefully you won't have to resort to your MP. local press etc ...
