I live in Ireland and I was diagnosed with Type 2 (although i may have 1.5/LADA) at the beginning of October and a week and a half later i was given a glucose monitor and some strips - i get the lancets, strips and my diabetic meds free via the Long Term Illness Scheme - i don't know why doctors don't prescribe glucose monitors in the UK to people with Type 2 diabetes - it's complete madness!!
There were a couple of times when i was on Diamicron meds when i felt light headed and dizzy and i thought i was going to pass out and my monitor told me i was at 4.2 so i knew then i was getting low readings and i knew then to eat something to bring my levels back up. Even when i got extremely thirsty and a fuzzy brain and i got a reading of 14.0, i knew then to test more frequently and if it went over 15.0 i knew then i had to go to A&E as was told to me by my GP - glucose monitors are invaluable!!
I would demand a monitor!!!
