I was diagnosed Type 1 on the 4th July 1984 when I was just 10 years old, think the shock hit the parents more than me back then but 25 years down the line I sometimes wish I had listened to all that good advice that was given back then.
I have had my fair share of ups and downs over the years and one massive wake up call about 10 years ago when I suffered a severe hypo while driving (I remember nothing, my wife remembers everything). That wake up call made me see sense in the need that I had to take control of my diabetes and I managed fairly well over the subsequent years.
Lately though it's slipped again, thankfully not to the same extremes as I swore I would never let that happen again but after my visit to the doctor just today it felt like I was having my heart ripped out when I was told my HbA1c was sitting at 10%.
For the sake of my 3 young kids and my wife, the rule book is out again and I am now working on a plan to get the amount of insulin and carbs I am taking down to an acceptable level (it would seem I have been taking too much across the board). The nurses at my local day care centre have been fantastic and understanding and it was only by browsing the net for advice that I came across this site, which seems to be the place to be for all things diabetes related.
Hopefully you wont mind too much if I share my trials and tribulations from time to time as I try to get my control back on track. I'm sure that the advice I have read here so far is just what I need.
Thanks, Alasdair
