Hi Amanda, I live in Oz, down under and have managed to be on insulin for 51 years. Cataracts replaced, carpal tunnel releases ( nerve at wrist) and releasing of some trigger fingers. So, as my specialist doctor says, make sure you have a retirement plan worked out. You will have experienced the changes in eduction and treatment over the years and all your hard work allows you to enjoy all these things. After about the 45 year mark I was finding my intensive basal-bolus regime, up to 8 shots per day, was not working well enough. I started on an insulin pump and have not looked back. I was at risk of losing my driver's license and with that at least part of my work so I am thankful and only wish I had embraced the pump much, much earlier.
Retired now and loving it. Enjoy your children and your life. I never stop learning and I know that you are the same. That is how one survives. Fly a kite or two with your kids !!
