Hi isis2.
Welcome to the forum.
It is great that you are controlling your diabetes and perhaps you could pass on some tips to others.

Look forward to your postings.

Catherine.

Hello, this is my first time of being on a chat forum, I have had difficulty getting on it & it is a complete fluke how I have managed it so need a guide for future reference.
I am in shock when diagnosed 2 weeks ago that I had type 2 diabetes treatment is by diet, when seeing the dietician & showing her an outline of my lifestyle & diet she said that there was no advice that she could give me as I was doing everything that is adviced inc. exercise, the only advice she did give was to use Benecol (£3 for 6) and or Flora active drinks every day,(£3.97 for 7) Benecol (far too sweet) & flora I think is soya milk, horrible.
By chance I have come across this website, (is it the same as Diabetes or.co.uk) & found that there is a type 1.5 diabetes & reading about it describes me, no symptoms, slim, healthy, sugar only slighty raised. This leaves me rather in limbo as I do not know what to do & won't know if things are getting out of hand between blood tests each year. The more I read about Diabetes the concerned I am becoming.
Sorry if I'm going too long but anyone else in a similar situation please that can advise, I would be grateful if help.
Thanks

Hello jayemm and welcome to the forum.

I am not surprised that you are confused given the stereotype of what a T2 is. I was also faced with the same reaction as you and told to just keep on doing what I was doing and clearly that is obviously fine if you are totally healthy but nonsensical when you have been diagnosed with diabetes! I think that the problem for the professionals may well be that learning about diabetes is absolutely not the same as living with diabetes.

If you explore some of the other threads on the Greetings and Introductions section you will find the 'advice for new T2s' which either Ken or Sue, the Forum Monitors, often post. You will note that the advice is significantly different to that which you and I were given at diagnosis and I have found it to be a literal lifesaver - as you will if you carefully follow it. The key to living with diabetes is to control it rather than letting it control you!

Have you been given a meter and testing strips :?: Do you know what your BG levels are - ie the numbers :?:

As for how you do things on here if you have never been on a forum like this before it does make your eyes go crossed when you start but you just have to remember that you can't do anything horrendous if you just click away and try anything and everything. To start with I made sure that I typed everything onto a document first and used the cut and paste solution just in case I lost it when I clicked on what I thought might be the right button - and I lost stuff loads of times to start with but eventually the fog clears!!

This is a brilliant resource so do explore as much as you can and if there are questions you need answers to then do ask them as there are always folk on here happy to help. 8)
