Hi everyone my daughter Betsy was diagnosed on 6th Dec she is 2 we are very new to this but i feel that we are slowly getting there, the only thing i find difficult is understanding how she is feeling as we are constantly guessing for example what is it like to have a hypo or hyper, she seems happy enough and her 3 sisters ( aged 4,5 & 8 ) are very hands on when it comes to finger pricks

hi, im nic, mum to Jazmin who is 3.
My little girl is just starting to tell us when she is hypo and for her most of her hypos have her feeling very hungry! like she needs food straight away also she can seem a bit distant but is always happy to check her blood if were unsure
When shes high she is very unco-operative! think huge paddys! terrible twos have nothing on her lol luckily she isnt high very often.
Hope you're all adapting well, if you need any help just ask theres loads of parents of very young diabetics on here x

Hi Nic thanks for that im starting to notice with Betsy that she gets very angry when shes hyper but i didnt know how much i could blame on the fact that shes also 2!! and when she was in hospital i was told by one of the nurses that it was to early for me to start noticing signs of hypos and hypers, just goes to show how little they know  she is really good at letting me do BG's to check. its nice to know that there is other people out there when i need advice thanks again

i'm mum to Mia, she was 4 yesterday and was diagnosed 11 weeks ago, felt lost at 1st but were slowly getting there, with thanks to Mia who just take it all in her stride
we notice that when she is hypo she usually feels feel tired, quite weepy and upset, but then again, sometimes she shows no signs at all :?
this is a great site with loads of fantastic help and advice on offer

hi, im anna marie mum to dylan aged 8 who was diagnosed at 4. this is a great site and there are always people about to help with any advice needed it is lovely to not feel completely alone in what u go through on a day to day basis living with a child with diabetes. dylan still doesnt always notice hypos or hypers but we have not got great control dispite working our bums off lol i went out the other day tested dylan b4 lunch and he was 1.7 :? with no sign then all of a sudden he jerked and nearly head butted the desk in front of him but that was quite unusual to be that low. usually he looks abit drunk when low and has really bad mood swings but they are all different but every single one of them is brave for what they go through on a daily basis how many children they come in to contact with inject themself daily?? good luck

Hi

My son Erland is 2 and was diagnosed last February aged 20 months. Erland is just starting to tell us when he is hypo by asking for apple juice and a biscuit which is our treatment for one. Sometimes though there just are no indications that he is high or low. Often if he's high he's thirsty and asking for a drink.

Don't feel alone as there are a lot of us out there.

thanks everyone for your replies its nice to know there is help and advice from people who know how i feel Betsy is doing well and we have our 1st carb counting lesson on friday which will be interesting  i am starting to notice the hypos a bit more, she goes really quiet ( which for betsy is very strange ) and just comes and sits on my lap she also gets big purple marks under her eyes which dissapear as soon as her levels go higher.my next question for u all is.. when Betsy is having a hyper but its to soon for her nexy meal and insulin is there any other way to bring her levels down? we encourage her to move around more but for a stubborn 2 yr old this can be hard.. she is having insulin 5 times a day so im suprised that she has more hypers than hypos :?

Hi Linsey

In the beginning we had 6 weeks of lots of high readings. DSN said it was natural for Erland to be absolutely starving as his body was trying to recover his lost weight. His eating did slow up and then it was easier then to get better blood sugar readings.

Also if you haven't been carb counting already that would probably explain high readings. The carb counting will help you control the blood sugar too. its hard to begin with but well worth it to achieve better readings.

Good luck

Annette

before we did carb counting we could give jaz an adjustment between means of half to one unit. But to be honest there was always the possibility than she could then hypo!
once the carb counting is in place and her insulin ratios are right she shouldnt have a lot of hypers! Jazmin only really does now if she is poorly!
now we adjust at meals if she needs a bit extra, but of course we know that as she grows were always gonna be changing her ratios but seem to have got them preety settled for now (fingers crossed).
Todays bloods are 5,4,8 then 6 at tea so good day today!
