I am a tyoe 2 diabetic and am tablet controlled. I have a monitor which I use occasionally and am overweight. I cannot seem to shift the weight as 10 months ago I broke my ankle and sadly I also had an undiagnosed break to my knee so moving is still painful. My leg has healed now but isnt straight so may have to be rebroken a prospect I am non to keen on. I eat small portions and do have the odd treat but my biggest problems seem to be my blood sugar drops too low if I dont eat carbs at every meal. goes from unmeasurably low to about 3.9 and I pass out. I dont want to lose my driving licence as it is vital to my life so I do eat carbs and essentially do eat more than I should for weight loss. I am on loads of drugs I take three 80 mg tablets of gliclazide one pioglitazone and 2000 mg od metformin per day which is close to the max for oral diabetic treatment. My diet consists of a small bowl of fruit and fibre with skimmed milk two slices of bread with butter lettuce and chicken breast for lunch and a meal of meat/fish table spoon of potatoes and veg. I do have the occasional sweet but not often and I only eat fruit or raw veg between meals. I get cold sweats and feeling faint if I eat less than this and my meter readins fall low. I drink no added sugar weak squash, water or black coffeeand rarely diet coke. I would love to have things under better and more even control as my blood sugars tend to go up and down quite a lot. I walk the dog but I am inpain and can only go frequently short distance rather than a longer walk. I am also on tramadol for the pain and aspirin statin and ramapril as preventatives to side effects from my diabetes. I am sure they look after me very well at my diabetic clinic sometimes I think too well

Hi Sometime and a warm welcome to the forum.

Sorry to hear that you are experiencing hypos and have limited mobility.

Have you read the advice for newly diagnosed?
viewtopic.php?f=20&t=17088

I am wondering if your blood sugars would be more stable if you used this advice? You seem to be eating a lot of simple carbs at meals and perhaps if you changed this to complex ones then you might notice a difference. Nobody can work out your level of acceptable carbs for you as we all vary as to an acceptable level.
If you monitor your levels before food, one hour afterwards and two hours afterwards then your blood sugars may be swinging from very high to low in that time and this would be the reason why you feel so rotten. Have you tried this to see what readings you are getting?

Hope this makes sense. Please ask questions, someone will answer.

Hi,
I'm type 2 on tablets too.
I was on Gliclazide for the first few months to bring my levels down from far, far too high at the start. Once I got within recommended levels I found I was frequently plummenting far too low too quickly and like you I had to keep eating to try and stay ok.
I ended up being taken off the Gliclazide and since then I have managed to keep my levels more stable and can manage 4 hours between meals without snacking most of the time now (something that wasn't possible before).
Have a chat with your doctor / nurse or whoever.
Hope this helps.
