I am new to the forum, although I have been diabetic for the last eleven years. It is good to be able to get some tips on managing my diabetes. I find that if I test my blood sugar early in the morning, i.e. 6.30 a.m. it could be 5.9, yet if I test at 8 a.m. it can be up to 9 or 10. Could anyone tell me why this is and what I can do about it? Thanks.

This late at night the board is quiet, I know there's a "dawn syndrome" about the liver dumping glucose into the system so your body has the energy to get up and do things but in the morning there'll be people around who can explain it better than I can!

Hi mairead and welcome to the forum The high morning level could be down to the Dawn Phenomenon, as Gappy says, where your liver will dump glucose into your bloodstream to help you start the day, so your level goes higher. Sometimes a small carby snack at bedtime can help to stop or slow that down. Here is some information on it.

Since you are looking for tips on how to manage diabetes, here is some information written for new members although I know you are not newly diagnosed. Perhaps you will find something useful in here. Ask as many questions as you like as there is always someone who will be pleased to answer.

Thank you Gappy and daisy1 for your helpful comments. I am going to try having a carbohydrate snack before bed to see if it helps. I will keep you posted!

I have tried having wholemeal toast at bedtime, sometimes porridge and it seems to be helping. BG is more stable. I also split my Levemir dose, 8 units in the evening and 4 in the morning and that seems to be helping after breakfast highs. I take 10 units Apidra at breakfast, 4 at lunch and 8 at dinner. My last HbA1c was 8. My aim is to get it lower. It is so difficult to find a good balance! I do sometimes adjust the Apidra according to what I eat, but I mostly stick to the above doses.
