I was diagnosed Type 2 eighteen months ago. I've been diet controlled and got my HbA1c down to 39.
I suffer from depression which is medicated and I belong to a slimming club.
My recent HbA1c showed a shocking increase to 52. I'm juggling the diabetes and depression (as I'm sure many of you do) and finding it very hard to eat sensibly at the moment. Some of this is complacency and laziness I'm sure but I'm an emotional eater!
Any advice on getting back on track would be gratefully appreciated.

What were you typically eating in the run up to that excellent 39, and what changed in the period before the 52?
 
Thanks for replying. Taken me a long time to be brave enough to post on the forum. I think, to be honest, I've sabotaged myself. I've said "blow it" if I wanted chocolate etc. Knew I shouldn't but couldn't stop myself. I ate lots of salmon and avoided red meat as much as possible. I've just graduated from uni after 5 years whilst being a working mum so at least the pressure has decreased. I need to try and focus now on controlling my diabetes.
 
You have done a good thing by posting on this forum. There are so many knowledgeable people here that help with tips and advice, not to mention the great support. Keep posting!

You have got your levels down once, so you know how to do it. All you need now is a bit of motivation to do it all over again. Congratulations on graduating. It is hard being a student and a working mum, but that is behind you now, so yes, start to focus on your health again. Empty your cupboards of all the bad foods, go shopping for some good foods, and join in any discussions on this forum you find interesting, or ask any questions. No-one bites.

Have you got a home testing kit with in-date strips? If not, I suggest you get one. My meter is my main motivation as it would scare me to death if I had high readings and make me do something about it.
 
Thank you so much. I do have a monitor but my nurse wouldn't give me testing strips. I've got my full review on 26/8 so will discuss with her.

I need to get my head around what I need to eat. Yes, get rid of the wrong foods and stock up on the right ones. It can be so confusing! Thankfully I've got the rest of August until I'm back to school so I can focus on this.

Very few of us type 2's are lucky enough to get strips prescribed. I had another debate with my GP about it just this morning. We simply buy our own. I believe testing is essential. If you test before a meal or snack, then 2 hours after your first bite (with nothing else in between) you can see what that food is doing to you, and make a decision whether to have it again, reduce the portion, or discard it. Great for learning, and great for motivation.

Oh! I'll look into buying the strips then. Will also discuss with my nurse. I pay for prescriptions anyway!

Why, I though diabetics get free meds in uk and 52 is diabetic in the uk?

Emotional eating or I could be the carbs are getting you

A lot here control our diabetes with a low carb diet, you eat the same amount of protein and replace the lost energy with oils and fats

Interesting - I get free eye tests for being diabetic (as well as for being 60) and the DN said I could have free [cough] quasi-Viagra [/cough] if I wanted because of being diabetic, and I'm not on any meds (sorry Seajaize for going OT a bit there).
 
No problem. You made me smile! Well done! Not on metformin so no free prescriptions but I recently discovered that I can get free annual eye tests at my optometrist. Hooray!
