Help/advice for blurred vision

Hi Nicola, I had all the same symptoms before being diagnosed as Type 2 in May this year. Once your blood sugars reduce your eyes should adjust. It can take a while. If your blood sugars where high glucose collects behind the eye and this causes the eye to blur. Dont rush out and get more glasses. Speak to your diabetes nurse. Im sure you will be reassured and she can explain in more clinical detail what happens to your eyes when bm is high. My eye sight is still a bit blurry, but is improving, like you had glasses last May for reading, at that time I was unaware I had any signs of diabetes. A year later I was diagnosed. It's a lot to get your head around at first. But there are some very supportive people on here and your local diabetes nurse should see you regularly to start with. Good luck and look after yourself. I had new glasses last Dec unknown to me at the time my BS levels were in the 20's. I have now corrected my sugar levels and since correcting them my eye sight had changed for the better and had a new lens prescription made.

Everyone is different in how long it takes for the eyes to return to a more normal shape, with me it was around 2 to 3 months before needing a change in prescription.

If you need change the lenses more often it can work out cheaper either buying the cheapest glasses you can get or try an independent supplier of glasses. I was told it would be £39 + the lens cost to change the lenses per pair of glasses by one of the big names, went to an independent shop and it was just the cost of the lenses which were cheaper as well.

The eye retests should be free as its a diabetic related problem.

Hi, I had exactly the same with the optician prescribing new glasses which by the time I collected them were useless. I complained to Tesco pointing out that they had a duty of care and should have recommended that I see my doctor to test for Diabetes before prescribing new glasses. They agreed to replace the lenses free of charge once my eyes settled. Give it a try, they know they have a duty of care. I was diagnosed in march and my eyes have only just settled. Good luck

the eye screening is not an eye test, but they will get you to read from a chart briefly. It is a better form of the photo/ophthalmoscope examination that your optician does at a check-up.

They will photograph your retinas without the interference of your iris and examine the photo for retinopathy. That photo will then be used in subsequent years to look for differences.

As others have said, get your BG under control, then go and see the optician - unless, of course, your eyesight has deteriorated to the extent you need new glasses for driving.
