I’ve had a kidney infection and put on antibiotics NITROFURANTOIN 100mg ,1 capsule 2 a day
Today my sugars have been going nuts with the highest being 25.9 mmol
Drinking water to try and bring the level down
Don’t know what else to do
The meds I am on is metformin 200mg daily and a weekly insulin injection called Truelicity
Sorry if I have spelt that wrong
So advice needed please

Hi,
Infections can cause very high blood glucose, if your worried call 111 for some advice.
Drinking will help, may I ask what foods your eating?
Monitor your blood glucose regularly.
Take care

I’ve drunk lots of water
Not really eating much having stuff like soup and some nutritious homemade food that my hubby has made
Did sugars just now and it was 23.1
So gone to bed as feeling shattered
Gonna phone my Drs surgery in the morning and ask for a call back as I don’t want to have to go out unless I have too

Hi,
Glad your phoning your Drs surgery, hope you feel better very soon.
Take care

I reckon 111 might be in order........especially if you start developing any other symptoms

If you Google "nitrofurantoin and blood glucose" you will see several articles which mention BG swings when taking this antibiotic.

How much carb though?

I hope you feel better soon. It doesn't seem to take much to upset stable BG. Lowering the carbs we eat seems to be the only thing we can control. Additional medication might not be the best idea because if the antibiotic is the cause of BG swings, you'd have a problem when you stop the antibiotic. It's the old balancing plates on sticks problem.

Thanks all for your replies
Just woken up done my sugars and this morning it is 7.5

Glad to hear that! It is amazing how much sugar your own body can churn out when there is an infection. My blood sugars seemed stuck at 25+ when I had a UTI and even on half a gallon of insulin, they would not budge. Hope you can get advice on what to do if and when this happens again. If you've had antibiotics consider some live yoghurt to rebalance your gut health so that you aren't vulnerable to a follow up bug!
