Since I've started taking metformin SR 2 times a day (2 at lunch, 2 at evening meal) I've had stomach pains at about 1 or 2 am, distended stomach etc, wind I assume. Anything I can do that might help with these symptoms, would eating earlier help? or eating less for my evening meal?
Only thing I can suggest, if you are not already doing so, is to take them in the middle of your meal, with a glass of water. That way they are digested with the food and so are less likely to have side effects. Indigestion is a known side effect, but nowhere near as severe in Glucophage as it is in metformin.
If you only just started taking them it might be a good plan to back off on the dose until this no longer happens, then ramp the dose up more slowly. Usual practice with the non-SR type is to walk up from a low starter dose, some people find this also needs to be done with the SR version.
when i started metformin 4 tablets per day 500mg tabs ,l take 2 at breakfast and 2 with my evening meal which was the times my diabetes nurse suggested,l had all the symptoms you have but they settled down once my body adjusted to taking them ,hope this helps best wishes anne x
