Help Please: Gym Routine

Hi Guys,

I have recently joined the gym and am looking for advise regarding my insulin pre/post workout.

I am Type I and control my diabetes using an insulin pump.

My blood sugar is generally good and my recent HbA1c was 6.4.

But I don't want to kill myself with the gym.

What I would like to know is:

- How long before the gym do I lower my Basal rate (if at all) and to what level? My 'normal' level is 1.0 per hour.

- How long after the gym to I keep my Basal rate lowered (if at all)?

- Should I consume carbs before/during/after the gym and again what sort of quantities?

- What level should my b/s be before I start the gym and is there a top level above which I should not train? (I suspect there is)

- Does anyone with diabetes use any supplements while going to the gym (legal obviously)?

I think thats all, but hopefully people will also discuss similar questions!

Thanks
dave

I think it is going to be an individual thing. My blood sugar could often drop as much as 5mmol/ml with an hour at the gym. I found for me, the easiest thing to do was to take my pump off for the gym and my bm would still drp a little, but not by as much as 5 in an hour.

It will also depend on what exercise you do, if you are just doing resistance stuff, non-areobic exercise, this can actually cause your blood sugar to rise, if you are just doing aerobic stuff, that is hat brings the blood sugar right down, so should probably aim to do a good mix.

Trial and error I thnk, be sure to take glucose tablets or drink with you and don't forget your bm monitor.
