Help Please

Is it common to have fluctuating sugar levels if one starts insulin?
Boyfriend has type 2 and has just started insulin. Levels have gone down and up over the past 3 days of usage, from 14 to 6 to 11 to 13 to 7 etc.

We are new at this, so any advice would be appreciated

What type of insulin(s) is he on, and does he use a set amount at mealtimes or does he calculate the dose each time based on the amount of carbs?
