Hi everyone. Just wondering if anyone had any advice for me. Im Type 1 and coming out of my honeymoon at present so increasing novorapid with meals to try and get good control. I always feel really hungry at about 9pm ish and need to have a decent snack. problem is it always seems to put my sugars up, i have either cereals or toast or the occasional bag of crisps, last night after reading other posts I tried cheese and crackerbread but unfotunately didnt fill me up at all and ended up having that with a bowl of ceral and crisps. needless to say my levels were far to high before going to bed. Does anyone inject novorapid with snacks?? I think my diabetic nurse said not to but cant quite remember. Oh and could anyone remind me of the basic formula for units of novorapid to carbs? I would like to add that this forum has been excellent and appreciate all the info everyone gives, you'v certainly made me feel better in times of despair!

Hey si-hard

I totally get the night-time muchies thing - I open the fridge most nights and stare longingly at my husband's choccie stash!

I was a bit worried by you saying that you snack on cereals etc as thes are mostly carbohydrates. These require large doses of Novorapid, and you will get big spikes in your levels. Also, if you're not injecting for them then you'll really see the highs!

Everyone's carb-insulin ratio is different. Mine is 2units on Novorapid per 10g carbs. We worked this out by keeping a food diary and recording carbs eaten against injections then fine-tuned the results.

Another prob having carbs so close to bed is where are they going? You're heading to bed where they will sit, not running a marathon burning them off - your body will struggle metabolising them.

I had the same problems (a small bowl of Special K will send me from 5mmol to over 20 mmol in about an hour!!!) and had to wean myself off cereals! I sometime snack on low-fat Babybels, but find a handful of nuts really helps. You could also try some cold meat (ham?), hard-boiled eggs, celery/cucumber with peanut butter, or even a hot drink can help!

I started dropping my carbs after reading about everyone elses experiences and have seen a phenomenal difference! I used to inject about 45-50 units of Novorapid a day and still ran sugars of about 12mmol. Today I've had 20 units, ran at about 5mmol and even had a hypo (so this was too much!!!) It's a real juggling game this diabetes!!!

Hope this helps a bit - some experts will hopefully be along shortly!!!

All the best

I keep sliced cold meat and Peperami in the fridge for the"munchies" and it works for me.
Then of course there are nuts

A couple of slices of ham and cheese. If I must have a crunchy base I sparingly use Ryvita.
That and a handful of nuts or raisins seems to do the trick.
