Because I'm too lazy to write out a totally new post ....

"Some of you will know me, some of you won't, I've already seen a few friendly names I recognise

For those of you that don't know me;

I'm called Patrick ( Fester has been a nickname for years now) and i'm 36, T1 Diabetic since about 1993. Last Hba1c was 6.3 so that's all good. I live near Milton Keynes although i've moved around a bit, you won't notice the hint of Geordie as I type. What else, hmmmm taking Porcine Isophane as my background insulin and Novorapid as the other. Quit smoking 4 months ago which was gone ok, slight increase in food and a slight rise in post meal BG and an increased reliance on red wine which is now being addressed. I cut it out on Wednesday last week ( totally unrelated reason ) and 5 days later, I feel vastly improved, both mentally and physically. Only ever had 2 vices in life both of which have been addressed.

For those of you that do know me, you'll remember ( or maybe not) that i've had my fair share of laser treatment for background retinopathy, well that's been on and off for the last 5 or 6 years. Now after recent photographs there have been more changes that require further examination, the beginnings of suspected Maculopathy. No great surprises, i've been diabetic a while, i've not always been a good diabetic and I know i can always be a better one. I suspect the change is due in no small part to removing smoking from the lifestyle and adding in a little too much wine however that doesn't mean it can be ignored. I'm off in to get it all checked out in 3 weeks time as I didn't want to wait till the appointment in Feb 2010. On the plus side, i've lost a stone and a bit, my BP is down by at least 30% and I feel a lot healthier.

I haven't tuned into one of those awful 'ex smokers' and I've no intentions of doing so however, if anyone is wondering whether to quit or not, I can say it's worth doing. Food tastes better, sleep is less disturbed, more energy etc etc it really is worth it.

Anyway all that diabeasties stuff aside, it's nice to find a new forum that isn't overrun with newsgroup trolls - look forward to chatting to you all"

I've nicked the above from another place I used to post.

So what to add to the above that's changed since November 2009?

1. Have started and quit smoking another 3 times, now that i'm getting into exercise properly it may stick
2. Have managed to steadily cut down and keep cut down my red wine intake.
3. Killed a X trainer after 18 months of sustained abuse ...
4. Bought new 'proper' X trainer a month ago and have covered almost 160km on it
5. I'm 39 not 36
6. No more laser treatment for retinopathy ... although i've an appointment / checkup due and I reckon i'll be due a few more burns.

What's become very clear is that exercise really is undervalued as a medication and the excuses that we make to avoid it really are just that. I'm now up to a reliable 7.6km / 40 minutes of X trainer per night at least 5 nights a week. I'm the fittest I've been since i was 18. Waist down to 33" from 38+. Resting pulse down to just under 70bpm and also down on insulin requirements. I was taking 18u of Porcine Isophane in the mornings and evenings, that's now down to 16u am and 12u pm.

It will be interesting to see what has happened to my Hba1c the next one i go for, stepping up to 45 minutes per evening of exercise has required a fair degree of monkeying with diet and insulin but overall I think it's worth the hassle. As i've got fitter, it has made me feel like getting fitter so rather than stopping at my original 15minutes of exercise ( on cheap nasty X trainer) , i've worked up to a daily 40 to 45 minutes on the new one. My goal is to hit the daily 10km which is about an hours worth .. managed it twice in the last couple of days including a 12.4km session on Sunday.

I guess it's just a little too easy to let yourself think 'I can't do that' when in actual fact if you want to, you really can.

Anyway the point of the post was to say hi and let the folk i know ( and who know me) know i am still very much alive and kicking .... at least for the moment

Cheers and all the best,

Patrick
