if you must eat chocolate, only eat that which is greater than 70% Cocoa as it is approx 30% carbs. A small treat portion of 10g per day say would therefore be only 3 grams. BUT if you are going to be tempted to eat more, then I suggest you snack on walnuts, Brasil nuts and almonds, which are a more diabetically healthy option and much less carbs!!.

A quick note on anxiety. We have all contemplated the possibility of an early death, amputations, strokes etc...BUT....there is a growing community of self aware diabetics (of which this forum is a significant member!)....as long as you control your BG and keep your health check appointments...you have a very high chance of avoiding serious complications and will live as long as your neighbours. The reason why diabetics get such a bad general prognosis from their GP's and co, is because only a small percentage of the UK's millions of diabetics actually buy into self management. Next time you bump in to a fellow T2, (general public - not this forum!), just ask them what they do about managing their diabetes. They are more likely to say that they take a couple of pills, or that they arent prepared to make changes or even that they dont do anything as they only have the "mild" form of diabetes. Very sadly it is those that we fail to bring on board that will suffer the horrors and as it is 80% of all diabetics that chose indifference to proactive self management, then we all get tarred with the same brush and their statistics affect our prognosis!!

So get managing and stop worrying!!.

Final thought - Are you taking Metformin?..One of its effects is to aid weight loss and suppress appetite

I happen to like dark chocolate - or rather I used to (somewhat forbidden fruit nowadays).

If you really fancy an experiment, try the 99% cocoa chocolate. It's not an experiment you are likely to repeat.

Someone brought a couple of bars into the office but suggested that we only try a quarter of a square. I really sucks all the moisture out of your mouth to the point that you think you are chewing cardboard.

...I was walking thorugh Lidl's with my better half yesterday and was looking at all the Christmas stuff and imagining what I can not have this year as it's my first diabetic Christmas

Includes :-
Mince Pies, Christmas Pud, Christmas Cake, Dundee Cake, Butter Stollen, Dates, Goose Fat Roast Potatoes, Roast Stuffing, Sugar Mice!, Brandy Snaps, etc etc etc...

....Still I can have 10g of 70% cocoa chocolate and if it tastes like something off a donkey, then maybe I can disguise the taste by mashing it into my sprouts..... :lol:

if you had asked me 4 months ago, I would have gone to the school and frightened the life out of the bullies with my 18 stone frame!!!. Unfortunately, now they would probably bully me too!!!....

Only kidding, I would ask to see the school's charter and raise the issue with the headmaster. If that fails, then go to the LEA....

....I detest bullies...

From what I can make out, it seems to me that you want to try and stay off meds as long as possible. It is possible to control BG levels with diet (and allegedly exercise). It is also possible to eat reasonably well and healthily.

The trick is to steer clear of convenience food and prepare meals from fresh ingredients. It then becomes easy to control the carb intake because you know what you are eating. Meat and fish is carb free and a couple of fresh green veg makes a perfectly tatsy meal. You can add a small potato for variety or even a small amount of pasta or rice. These last ones do contain carbs so the emphasis is on small.

I have got my BG levels well under control (typically under 7 and often under 6) so it can be done.

Unfortunately diabetes is a progressive condition so this may not always be the case, but AFAICT, if you keep the BG within good limits you may delay the day you need to advance to the next stage (meds). The one thing that you really want to avoid is the point at which you have to start using insulin.

The only positive side to being on meds is that prescriptions become free, but that is a side issue.

I am an insulin dependant diabetic for 15yrs already. Considered a "brittle" diabetic and after numerous doctors and specialists, nobody can get my levels under control.

Still positive and trying to get to the goal.

glad you are getting your diabetes under control. i am a mum of a boy with type one, and i had not before realised that people with type two were not automatically given meters and test strips. i think this is scandalous.
