Hi all, newly diagnosed type 2 with HbA1c result of 8.6%, high blood pressure and asthma, losing weight, trying to be healthy, not happy about practically giving up butter and chocolate, 39 years old, mother of 1, married, work part time, have dogs and cats and trying to set up an allotment site in Ashbourne, trying to find out as much about diabetes as possible.

Off to explore Diabetes.co.uk..........

OK, so I am replying to my own post! I have just read two pages of messages and realise that I need to come back here when I am not so tired! It looks like there is loads to learn here!
 
LOL yes there is a lot to learn here, WELCOME to the forum though I wish that you didnt have to be here if you know what I mean...but you wont have to give up butter, however the chocolate is a bit of a different matter.

Thanks! I have to say, that in a way my diabetes has given me the kick up the bum I needed to live more healthily - a little bit too much of a kick, but I welcome that side of it. The other sides can get stuffed, but hey!

I have the lower fat butter now, and as I have severely reduced how much I have I guess a scraping on one slice of bread a day won't be too bad!

Isn't it funny how interested you get about the subject when you're diagnosed! I have been a member of Diabetes UK since I had gestational diabetes 5 years ago, but just scanned it through without paying too much attention.... but NOW!!! Boy! :roll:
 
Yes it certainly is a kick, its so good that you take it serious and that you are willing to address the issue, I wasnt clever enough to do that, I thought if I ignore it all and rebel against it all would be ok...

Look at posts by Fast Eddie, Fergus and Diabetic Geek especially, get yourself a tester and check how your bg respond to the food that you have been eating, I dare say that you will find the lower carb that you go the better your results, and if you go low carb you can have the full fat butter and yet stll lose weight! Get hold of Dr Bernsteins book The Diabeties Solution, its many a diabetics bible, cut out transfats, consider cinnamon and some other supplements, but I will shut up now because I am sure that you will find it all overwhelming enough for now, but the more you learn, the better your control and you will hopefully avoid developing complications and be really healthy.

Hi Tigerhair and welcome to the forum. When you say you have asthma, do you mind if I ask what type of inhaler you use? I know it seems like a daft question but everytime I read of someone getting diabetes, who has used a steroid inhaler, it makes me wonder if there is a link. That is only me wondering but I'd be interested to know, please.
 
I did do Atkins a few years back and lost loads of weight and felt really great, but I was told that LC isn't good for diabetics... have tried to do some research on it, but not had much luck... are there posts on here?

When you said bg, did you mean blood group?

Hi, yep I use seretide twice daily and that seems to keep me in check. OK... I had my son (vertical C-section), and suffered with gestational diabetes (so that was in the pipeline anyway and I really do think I had pre-diabetes for years - would feel shakey if I didn't eat, etc but they said I was OK after Josh). Then I had a hernia op (through c-section scar - ouch), followed by an op to remove lumps from my boobs, then I had several terrible bouts of colds and flu and was eventually diagnosed with asthma (the Dr said I had had that for years too because I always suffered from "my chest" right from when I was a child). THEN I've always had heavy periods but they got worse after Josh so they investigated that and were going to do a D&C but found my BP was too high for the op... so back and forth to my doctors for medication. THEN they checked my blood glucose and .... well... the rest is history. It's certainly been an interesting 5 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :|
 
No, I got it wrong.. it was my lumpy boobs first THEN my hernia op!!! ARGHHHH That's what anaesthetic and having a child does for you! I have a very tenacious link to reality these days :lol:
 
OK! I have read some of all that (my head is spinning), but I still have questions...

I have always thought that we were hunter gatherers... not farmers. So we ate meat, nuts, grains and berries. Not bread!

I felt very well when I did Atkins. I would like to try a low carb diet but.... I have high blood pressure - and a lot of diabetics die of cardiovascular disease so should I stay low fat too? Jeez my head is SO spinning at the moment....

What about ketones? Aren't they bad for the kidneys? :shock:

The hunter-gatherer point is a good one. The starchy carbs are a very recent introduction to the human diet, and success is, shall we say, mixed. With meat, veg, nuts and berries you would do vvery well I reckon.
Issues like high blood pressure, heart disease etc are comonly grouped under the term 'metabolic syndrome'. There is a great deal of evidence to suggest that the underlying cause has nothing to do with dietary fat and is much more closely related to elevated blood sugar and insulin levels.
Nothing wrong with ketones either, provided the levels don't reach the point where diabetic ketoacidosis is a risk. But then this is a symptom of a chronic lack of insulin, not an excess of protein.

My goodness, Tigerhair,sounds like you have had your fair share of problems. I'm sending you a p.m....not about the inhaler,about something else you mention that may be of interst to you. It is unrelated to diabetes.
