Hi there diagnosed type 2 last Tuesday and already a bit concerned.

I just ordered the same meter so hopefully I can start mapping what good and bad foods whch raise my BG levels soon too.

Have you done the site's low carb course which I'm on? It's excellent but a little frustrating because of the having to wait for each week's release. There is a link above if you are interested in giving it a go.

I'm so grateful to the site and forum for opening my eyes to the possibility of beating this. The Government, NHS and NICE are really failing people in my eyes by not promoting low carb as the way to have a chance of surviving and mastering diabetes.

Hi, Im so glad I got the meter, at least I can now test at various times of the day and post meals I havn't done the site's low carb course although I may give it a go. Ive basically been checking the food packaging on items and found items that can be replaced with low carb substitues such as courgetti instead of pasta, butternut squash noodles, free from pasta in H&B (although not opened these yet as dreading the smell!! I have been assured though by members on here that once rinsed they're fine). I also buy snack size cheeses now, babybel, marmite cheese, laughing cow and have these instead of crisps. Plus nuts. There's so much choice, I don't hate it at all. The nurse told me to just walk faster and eat healthier. That was it! Take care. thanks for the link, Ill take a look.
 
I'm loving the grub too. I haven't really looked for substitutes for what I used to eat as I've decided to just avoid carbs as much as I can. I've got it in my head that the more carbs I have, the sooner it'll be that I get the severe complications. It's working so far though I'll know more once I start monitoring and exercising.

We live remote, there is only one surgery nearby - but I don't suppose it matters as the NHS seem to all sing from the same hymn sheet. We just keep the doc handy for things that he can fix easily and we don't ask for advice... just come in here or google. LOL!
 
I fancied that might be the case. I'm not sure if anything can be done or if there is any ombudsman/overseeing body that you could contact to try and resolve the situation either.

Most food 8n the UK has a Carbohydrate per 100g amount on the label somewhere. If you weigh however much food of that item you intend using eg, for simplicity,

A weight of 100g of Spinach has 3g of Carbohydrate in it. So if you weigh out 100g of Spinach you would have the amount of grams of carbs stated on the label i.e 3 grams of carbs. If you had 200g then it would be 2 x 3g, because you have doubled the 100g, so you would have 6 grams of carb.

You do this for all of your food that you eat and add all the amounts together to find how many carbs each meal and then add the amounts for each meal to see how many you have eaten each day.

Please don't feel that the above is at all patronising or in anyway demeaning as there is definitely no intention on my being either. Having diabetes is daunting enough without someone being nasty towards you.

Please try and read what you can and if you are struggling with any aspects of it, for whatever reason, I urge you to look into what help and support is available to you, both locally, via your doctor or other health professionals and on the internet forums. Diabetes is definitely not something you should put off addressing til tomorrow.
